When you are sat in you're living room and you hear a loud exhaust or engine and you check to see if it's a Ferrari or Lamborghini but then it's an old Ford Fiesta with two exausts that are the size of bins...

So annoying!

more annoying than if it were actually from a more expensive car?

I am so glad that I just don't feel the need to check

My actual point is an expensive car as such has a loud engine because of the size and power.. why do people modify small cars to make them sound ten times louder.. to draw attention maybe

"My actual point is an expensive car as such has a loud engine because of the size and power.. why do people modify small cars to make them sound ten times louder.. to draw attention maybe"

because they enjoy modding cars i used to always have old bangers with silly stereos, i used to enjoy fitting them and used to enjoy listening to my music waaaaay up

it's not my thing any more but i can see the enjoyment of it.

also, not true, you can run massive [power fairly quietly, look at your rolls royces and your bentleys, nice and quiet ferrari's etc go out of their way to sound like they do, butterfly valves in the exhausts etc

Small cars to sound louder for attension? Ha. You should look at the money and mods that go into some 'little cars' that makes them look little but pack the punch of a supercar. One of my friend has a c63amg me. Absolute animal. Another has a stage 4 fiesta st. And the fiesta will still push the merc at 170mph! Just bear in mind. Its not all sound. No i dont have a little car either. But i am in the modified car scene. Just my 2p worth. Nothing better than a sleeper car

Yeah, the subs were 35kg each, 3 batteries at 25kg each, amps probably around 20kg, wiring anothe few kg

Sound proofing and sub enclosure probably about another 75kg

Far to much weight to put in a type R

Got rid of the other Civic before I killed it with bass since it was still worth quite a bit. Would of had to go down the route of internal bracing and windscreen bars to get things in place and I couldn't quite be arsed with it

I miss it though, stock speakers are killing me

I never tested with these, took it all out beforehand.

I had two 10" subs which I did 143dB with, then swapped to the ones I've just sold.

Would of probably tested somewhere around 153dB

Would of been in no wall class, if I'd of put them in a walled build it would of easily seen 156-157dB

Im helping my friend at min doing a non walled set up. He had 149db before but was on grass so doesnt help. Hes hoping for about 152-3 this time. Another of my friends is very well known in the show industry and regularly wins awards for his audio. His is walled though and runs direct of engine. 3 alternaters though

I didn't want to go down the route of multiple alts and £2000 on batteries alone

My car was still worth a fair amount so walling it would if written it off and cost me Serveral thousand pounds loss in the process

I just did a straight swap to the type r and sold the audio off for exactly what I paid for it.

Car audio is expensive!

Still got my hertz Mille legend door speakers though

Urgh yes!

But to be fair if someone is revving an expensive car in the town centre forcing everyone to look at them - surely that's equally as annoying!

It really upsets me!

It's petrol head culture I'm afraid.

The young kids would love to have proper fast cars, however they're limited by funds, and crippling insurance costs, caused by scheming cash for crash cunts, ambulance chasers etc.

So what options are they left with, modify and improve the small cars they have or drive boring shitters?

Fair play and let them carry on, their money, their cars, their hobby. As they grow up, their cars will get quieter, faster etc.

I was the same when I was 17, started out with a R5 GT Turbo, then moved into Cosworths fitted with 4 inch straight through exhausts, dump valves etc. Then from there it was Skyline GTRs, then finally a CLS 55 AMG.

I've owned sports bikes that have been louder than any car I've owned, rode Harley's that would wake up the dead in my local bone yard.

What's that saying? "Loud pipes, saves lives"

Actually the CLS was easily the best sounding, most reliable, most versatile car out the lot.

The cold start, the whine of the supercharger, the wail of the V8!

It's actually quite funny to see the people driving these cars doing their best to look cool behind the wheel...in full-on 'look at me' mode, and usually with some crap 'music' on the go too. No, in fact it's VERY funny most of the time There are plenty enough things (that can happen naturally) to make you look stupid at some point as you go through life, without spending the time effort and money to try to achieve it on purpose, but each to their own...

What annoys me is when you hear a car with a big exhaust and it's actually lowered the performance of the car. Subaru Impreza owners are the worst offenders for this.

It also annoys me that loud exhausts on bikes get pulls from the plod but rarely cars

Piece of junk

You honestly have no idea the amount of knowledge and effort that goes into these "souped up" cars do you?

That's before even getting into the money aspect.

And Im perfectly considert to my neighbours. As 99% of true enthusiasts are. But we just get lumped with the same stigma as the boy racers who've bought a cherry bomb exhaust and a Halfords subwoofer.

The genuine guys keep it to the racetrack and SPL testing lanes.

Theres a world of difference between enthusiasts and "boy racers"

And Im perfectly considert to my neighbours. As 99% of true enthusiasts are. But we just get lumped with the same stigma as the boy racers who've bought a cherry bomb exhaust and a Halfords subwoofer.

The genuine guys keep it to the racetrack and SPL testing lanes.

Theres a world of difference between enthusiasts and "boy racers" "

Well said but alas....each to their own but on travels throughout Europe I found you get equal amounts of enthusiasts as boy racers asking to hear the cars sound....

"It's petrol head culture I'm afraid.

"Loud pipes, saves lives" "

what do you drive now?

"My actual point is an expensive car as such has a loud engine because of the size and power.. why do people modify small cars to make them sound ten times louder.. to draw attention maybe"

Nothing wrong with modifying a car to improve performance. An engine is nothing but an air pump, you first need to get more air in (this generates induction noise), then you need to effectively get air out (this generates more exhaust noise).

Some smaller/cheaper cars can be loud, and to the untrained eye be put down to "boy racers". Yet actually be quicker than something really exotic / expensive.

For example go to a track day and you'll see some Honda Civics lapping faster than Porsches.

It all depends on if it's loud because the owner is a chav, or it's loud because it's had some serious modification.

Or if like mine it comes of the production line exactly like that...

Maybe it's a mostly man thing, but there is something about the sound of an engine. The low rumble of a powerful car engine, or even better a Rolls Royce Merlin engine. I even developed a taste for gas turbines...weird I know, but I find them both soothing and exciting at the same time...

"When you are sat in you're living room and you hear a loud exhaust or engine and you check to see if it's a Ferrari or Lamborghini but then it's an old Ford Fiesta with two exausts that are the size of bins...

So annoying! "

i used to have a metro gti that was loud. People would look for the sports car... but in its defence.... It did have a heavily modified lotus engine in it.. it may not have looked like a sports car.. but it certainly went and acted like one on the track

You dont see many loud hatchbacks these days.. or sports cars to be honest... was so disappointed when a amazing looking v8 went passed me and it was so quiet... those engines need to sing... not be silenced

West Wales

I run a modded Suzuki TL1000s V-Twin, it has a full Akrapovic large bore exhaust with carbon cans that it destroys after a couple of years.

My kids call it Chinook as that's what it sounds like on tickover & makes the windows rattle when I ride past. H actually admits to getting wet if ever we cross paths on the road with her in the car as I go past burying the throttle.

I am also still here because of it, riding at front of a group, bit of a gap behind first four round a blind bend & a car is waiting to pull out of a drive.

After they scraped two mates off the road (one dead, one two broken legs & punctured lung) the driver said

"I had my window open and heard a bike coming so let them past, didn't hear anymore so edged out and bam" following riders were on bog standard superbikes.

So loud pipes do indeed sometimes save lives..

I prefer cars that are sleepers and tend to debadge things like the 750i & T5R we used to own. Best sleeper we had was an old W124 Merc Estate running a Turbo-Intercooled 3.0 24valve straight six with about 320bhp outside of turbo noise it was as quiet as a standard car.

FN2

Not a big fan of the EP3, great car but I prefer the FN2

I very nearly bought an FK2 type R but couldn't justify owing about £15k on a car

They look enormous, I've only seen the 1.5 version in person and even that looks huge without all the type R bits on on top.

Apparently only 6" longer than the FK2 but they look a lot bulkier.

The FK8 type R will have a serious presence to it, huge arches, 20" alloys and the giant wing

Looks pretty mad

Maybe see it from our point of view.

Guys (usually) who enjoy putting time, money and effort into something we're passionate about.

I'd much rather put the above into cars than following what a lot of the lads I grew up with seem to be doing.

Drinking and seem to be the norm at the moment. Give me aloud car any day

So we'll said and income cases if your lucky quite a good investment....

I know of a clapped out clio with probably at least £20,000 worth of audio in it
