Could someone kindly explain in very simplistic terms how I would block out a face on a picture please?

If you're on a pc. Open it in paint and draw over the face with a colour brush.

If you're on a phone or tablet, download an app that allows you to draw on an image.

3rd option, ask someone to do it for you.

go to one of those cropping doodars and crop away

I second this, I have a Samsung and use it. Pretty sure it was available when I had an iPhone too.

On my Samsung phone I can click on a photo, select edit and crop bits off the edges which includes chopping most of my head off.
