I keep getting error 80070490 when I try to download updates. When I checked it out further it seems the system has NEVER downloaded any updates.

Go to this site and download the system update readiness tool, Hopefully this will beable to repair the corrupted file so you can get updates. If not try and get a copy of vista the same as you are running and you can do a repair from the disc. Hope this helps

Imalady Your friends drive will possibly be full up from updates or temory files etc, Get him to move music/pic's and the like to second drive, if it still shows full he will need to do a clean up.

"

Open the window before you launch it "

And if Microsoft installed the window, firstly remove the rug from the loung floor, stand outside your front door for 2.45 minutes, remove all fish knives from your drawers, replace the rug and you can finally open the window.

Written, smugly, on a Mac.

Repairing a broken window would be easier with glue.

Simple really its ,,,,,

Get windows 7 or Xp - if you like something that is reliable, performs well and maintains stability when needed the most.

A quick fix you can try to just to speed things up ..

Open an explorer window Ie. documents,in the address bar delete and type %temp% whick will reveal a load of files - press ctrl + A (selects all) then press delete.

Then let us all know how orgasmic it feels using after ???

There is a common solution for Windows Vista, it thinks it has the right to see everything - hence the name 'Vista' - so, you have to remember to pull the curtains when you shut it down.

I think I may have sorted it, found the windows vista disc, re-installed and now it's downloading 138 updates that should have been done over the years. Hopefully after this I'll be able to get it to accept an upload of windows 7 ... and all the other ones it's supposed to! xx

Why don't you use something like OpenSuse 11.4 instead?

It's free, and you won't need to pay for spyware removers or anti-virus software or a firewall or a office works package.

You have to have a fair bit of technical skill, be willing to do some Google searches to solve issue XYZ, but most people could handle it if they gave it a go.

I've had SUSE crash on me, maybe twice in the last tweleve months, which is freaking awesome compared to vista.

If you want a stable system and have the money then buy a mac if you haven't got the money then look at one of the flavours of Linux

Ubuntu is one of the favourite distribution and its free for personal use, you can download it and make a bootable disc so that you can try it before installing it! Lots of free software applications too.

Go on give it a try and you may end up ditching windows and saving yourself some money in the long run?

Yep i did the same thing, was a Linux newbie, now wouldn't do without it, reccomend Ubuntu which i believe has the best support, it updates itself daily and Free, if you need to run windows programs you can use the WINE emulator

Yep Win 7 for me, works fine and it cost not a penny. Downloaded it, removed the activation script file and 12months later still working tickety boo

If you do this, all the Microsoft updates still work, just don't download KB10713 (I think that's the one) or it'll tell you that it's not genuine. If that does happen though, the update can simply be uninstalled and your back once again running your very own free version of windows 7 Ultimate
