I know i'm a fine one to talk, but has anyone else noticed a decline in spelling standards and to a smaller degree punctuation?

It's one of those things that tells me a little about a person especially when receiving messages - I mean if you can't be bothered to spell correctly what else do you skimp on!

What's your thoughts?

I only think it's laziness when it's in a threat title. Possibly the opening post to that thread too. Because you can spend time on that. Your in no rush.

In other places you can be forgiven.

You see above, I forgot an apostrophe, if that bothers you. It tells me a lot about you..

Seriously, I couldn't give a shite that your phone, or your pc did not auto fill it for you. Because that's what some of us rely on these day.

My thoughts?

This old chestnut again...I occasionally mis-spell, miss a comma or two, start a sentence with a wrong word. Must mean I'm a shit at other stuff.

Sometimes I am just to tired to think, as english being my second language, it is tiring to translate everything and I do make a lot of grammatical mistakes.

Yet, I am on a swinging site, and not writing an academic essay. So, as long as it has been understood, that's the most important thing to me.

I don't mind as long as it's readable. I can get a bit lazy with apostrophe's as my autocorrect hardly ever adds them and I can't be botheted changing to symbols to go find one.

People who write discrete annoy me a wee bit though.

Iceland, but Aldi is closer..

Perhaps Sydney university should do a study into the correlation between poor spelling and punctuation and people's ability to have great sex..

I'm sure after many years of study they will find absolutely no link at all..

.

My personal thoughts on the subject is that if people are that annoyed by bad spelling and poorly used grammar, they should spend their time more constructively and go and do an English degree..

Or just do one..

Either way works for me..

You're assuming that poor spelling is due to laziness rather than lack of ability. Matthew will admit he is very poor at spelling etc and is why he ends up either apologising when he sends a message or requests that I send it, he shouldn't have to. For us, ones ability to spell doesn't define them. He excelled in other realms of education. Having completed a PhD and now in employment, I can say that the last thing he is is lazy.

No I haven't. A certain percentage of the population has always had poor spelling and grammar. However nowadays we communicate more in writing than we ever have, text, whatsapp, forums etc etc so it's noticeable. Often people write how they speak so "should/could/would of" is common, discrete replaces discreet, fulfil becomes for fill etc.

As long as we can understand each other I think there's room for leeway. The problems arise when text becomes ambiguous or meaningless.

For us it's the content of the message that's important, not necessarily the spelling or punctuation. Text speak is annoying, but language evolves all the time. "Wicked", "bad", and "sick" have all meant "good" at some stage!

Some of the nicest kindest funniest folk I know, can't spell, doesn't bother me in the slightest.

It doesn't make then lazy, spell check is great, if it recognises what they're trying to spell, and if they recognise the corrections offered.

I get tired as well as having tired eyes - and so make mistakes for those reasons, in addition to others. I prefer not to be hypocritical and so tolerate this, if I can understand.

I also get that fab is not a job and that people have limited time to invest. Sometimes it's the thought that counts.

I think spelling and grammar have been in decline for a few years. I'd love it to be otherwise but it will probably continue on this trajectory.

We're all free to filter people here as we wish to. If I couldn't communicate well with someone then this may influence my choices. That may also reflect more upon my inadequacies more than others. There's no perfect would, so I'll survive.
