Last night some charity workers were knocking on my door at a smidge before 8pm.. i put a post up on my facebook page (5000 members) simply stating
'Just a heads up there are charity workers knocking at doors, im in the ******** area'
got a comment this morning 'How awful! Charities reaching out and people giving their time to raise money for people less fortunate than us! For Christ sake it's a knock at the door! Get over yourselves!!!'
i hand on heart just thought of elderly people who may not appriciate a knock at the door so late, and also parents with younger children in bed..
im sat here pondering on this and probably over thinking it.. typical me |

Not at all - I'm not keen on people knocking that late. They are a cold caller like any other cold caller and outside normal work hours should be off limits. |

the way they said that was rude, they could have said it differently.
you're both allowed your opinions though, and either is fine. i think how it was said might be what's bothering you and if not then it should be only that. |

Personally i'm not on bakebook and think its a load of bollocks. That aside, i wouldn't care what others think. We can't control others thoughts and feelings and nor do we have the right to. So don't fret so much about the comment.
As for charity going door to door. I turn them politely away straight away. Not because i don't like charities but because I already give to selected charities on a regular basis. I choose these based on my own research and personal reasons. So as far as i am concerned that part of me is already sorted. So don't need or want to discuss other charitable needs at home or abroad.
So OP. Just chillout and ignore the negative in life and imbrace the positive. |

I'm an over-thinker too, so know where you're coming from! I think it's good to put a heads up. We don't open our door at night after opening it to a man wanking last January. I think 8pm is too late when children are in bed! |

yeah don't interact with people like that is the best thing to do.
even if you explained yourself, like you have done here, they probably don't care and would just have something equally as rude to say back. |

No your not I wouldn't be happy with a knock on the door at that time either. My rule of thumb is once my curtains are closed ya can all fook off.

I wouldn't have said anything but I'd be thinking something similar had I read a status like that on Facebook.
I wouldn't have put the status on either though cos if it was to warn elderly people I doubt they'd have Facebook anyway.
If it was dodgy people posing as charity workers to gain acces to property and then robbing people, (happened in the next town over) then a Facebook status to warn people would be appropriate. |

And this is from a friend you say?
I hate cold callers at the door or even phone, I give to several charities already on a monthly basis, I get these people need to get donations but knocking at a house at 8pm is not the way to do it, I'm usually in my satin PJs by then. |

I can't stand un solicited people knocking at my door at any time of be it a charity or religion or whatever or anyone else begging for money/donations/help of any description. Half the time I hate family and friends knocking if I'm not expecting them.
If I owned the property I'd like to dig a pit trap on the driveway. |

We put our lad down at 7ish and we get knocks like this, setting off the dog barking. Certainly not appreciated. We get a share of charity workers approaching us when we are out, so don't really appreciate cold callers. At 4pm it would be much more reasonable. |

I don't appreciate any charity workers knocking in my door. I choose what charities I donate to. I don't want strangers knocking and asking for my bank details if I'm honest. Too many scams going around. |

Seeing a post like that on Facebook would have me thinking "so what?" I answer my door at any time of the day or night, even if I know it's a charity worker or religious groups. I did the same when my children were young; a knock on the door wouldn't wake them anyway.
I doubt old, vulnerable people would be on Facebook and some might like someone to chat to.
I wouldn't have warned anyone about charities knocking; maybe shady looking characters (which we have had scoping out the house). |

Sorry should have been clearer.. it wasnt my personal profile, it was a 'group'.. i just refer to it as a page and it has 5000 members
It was a originally a selling page, but its a real community hub, with local business's recommendations, community events/fundraisers etc.. |

I get that...it's your space. I like somewhere no other bugger really ever invades. That's really difficult to achieve right now as the house is always full of carers and doctors and visitors so we've stuck a sofa in the shed and called it home as funny as it sounds. It's somewhere to retreat to without folk hassling |

I really don't like the charities that knock on the door. As they aren't volunteers knocking they are on a wage or commission.
I research the charities I donate too as I don't want most of the money going on wages and not to what it is intended for. |

I think all charity callers, religious callers, energy caller should not be allowed to call on people past 5pm
It's not fair on the elderly, disabled, people with families and also everyday people
Yes I know callers have a job to do the same as the rest of us
The same as call centres |

Agreed. As someone who took a job selling gas and electric at one point, it disgusted me to see that 5-9pm was regarded as the best time to knock doors. I appreciate people are home, but that's how you get doors slammed in your face. Horrible job and I feel for anyone doing it. |

Not an over reaction at all.
We've all read the articles in the media, how some charities operate nowadays, and usually in a less than charitable position, with more focus on CEO salaries.
I'd say the same re the hour of day they knock on doors, asking or soliciting for donations.
Common sense should say, it's too late.
People are naturally suspicious of them all nowadays. I donate, on my terms, not theirs.
Stick to your guns. If others jump in he precious outraged bandwagon, tell them to go do one with a sharp object. |

im not against charity workers (ive done fundraising in the past and continue to do so) what i disagree with is it entering your personal space.. phone calls, door knocking or being approached in the street. I dislike being preached too about religions also.
Ive no issue with general advertising on tv adverts etc.
I had to cross the road the other day walking down Torquay high street as i generally dont appriciate being approached by strangers. Was doing everything to avoid eye contact and i do feel that dreaded feeling..
I get people are different and dont mind it though. Must be a tough job. Id never be rude to an individual but the tactics must be hammered into them to try and get as much money as possible for their cause |

What is the point calling before 5pm? Almost everyone who is not skint is at work.
They call in the evening because the majority of working families are at home then. |

I joined Facebook when I went travelling on my own as a way of letting my family and friends know I was safe and having a whale of a time.
Our street has a street party every year and we have a closed group page for that but it has developed into much more. There gave been burglaries from sheds etc, cats poisoned, lots of foxes due to some idiot feeding them, letters posted to wrong address etc...we actually talk to each other on the street now, so Sassy your post would have been appreciated.
You can't please everyone! |

yes, unsolicited people approaching me for money i class as begging.
because they work for a company/charity doesn't change a thing. if an homeless individual approaches someone it's begging and they're often moved on, but it's ok because they have a coat with a charity's logo printed on it and a laminate round their necks? no.
i'd sooner give to the individual as the money isn't going on coats and laminates and those branded gazeebos they seem to love.

A doorknocker called at my house last night, I didn't answer the door. I don't feel bad about it, you can't give to every charity that asks. Mostly the doorknockers are doing it for payment and don't even belong to the charity they represent. Doorknockers can be rude sometimes, if I do answer the door I say no thank you and shut it again. Also lots of those charity collectors aren't volunteers, they get recruited and are paid and bonuses etc.

Well my parents would be classes as vulnerable elderly people, both being in their 70's and disabled and they are both prolific Facebook users .
They also have a sign on their front door supplied by the local authority stating "no uninvited callers".
Anyone who is rude enough to ignore it, whether a salesperson, charity collector or from a religious group, gets very short shrift and if they don't fuck off pretty quickly they are threatened with the police being called. |

1 in 15 people is a complete arsewomble, true fact... with 5000 people on your faceache page you got a lot of idiots in there...
If it is actually a real friend, you could point out that the charity door knockers are professionals not giving up time, but doing a job. on average it takes 2 years of monthly donations to their company before a penny reaches the charity. so don't give at the door call the charity direct instead. |

"Pissing off one person out of 5000 isn't bad odds.
I would have taken your post as " hide, the chuggers are on the way" rather than a help post for people with young children and old vulnerable people ( which is fine to say if you want to as they can be pests )
I doubt many old vulnerable people would be on Facebook.
My parents are! Both in their 70's one with ms and one with a heart condition
My old dear is too. Late 60s. "
Any more for old vulnerable FB people?

My mum asks if we're on The Facebook or The Youtube. She doesn't have a mobile phone either. She is 85 though. I'm only 8.5 years off of being 60.
60 is not old |
