I spent most of yesterday afternoon and evening watching back to back episodes of the 2016 remake of Roots on BBC i player
I remember watching the original when I was a teenager and it rocked my world to know that what I was watching was a true story. The level of violence and hatred was too much for a small town boy to take in.
The 2016 remake was nowhere near as shocking, but it still opened up the problems on the American psyche that still exists today.
Be quick though as episode 1 will only stay on i player until this Friday.
Good viewing if you haven't seen it, especially if you are younger than 50 and didn't see the original. |

I definitely will have a look at that.
It is interesting to see how racial prejudices are still prevalent in our western societies despite the progress we 'seem' to have made in Human right.

"I looked forward to it but found it very graphic and violent. Made me cry every episode, very moving. "
I seem to recall the original was much more graphic??? Unless that was just the effect that it had on my teenage mind at the time. |

Was a long time ago.
I was younger and perhaps didnt understand the meaning as I did this time. I suppose I was pretty naive back then and grew up with people using all the old Awful terms about Black people. So for me it was just more shocking this time.
I would like to see the old one before I could judge. Filming is so much better than 25 years ago. |

"Caucasians and other ethnicities were also traded as slaves throughout history too "
See ^ we are talking about a specific slavery trade in correlation to the the show yet you still have someone who comes with that sort of comment!
The fragility of some people is laugheable.

The new version is far more graphic and brutal than the old version. The story is told much better too now the constraints surrounding TV making have all but been removed. |

Exactly and this is the same type of ppl who would claim that unconcsious and sub-conscious racial prejudice doesn't exist. |

They just don't understand. It's better to pity them...it really pisses them off, for starters |
