Somebodys mentioned til death do us part.
Can't say for certainty as i'm not that old, but that was one of the shows that had an anti racist messages (for the time at least)
Alf garnet was a full blown racist that was always havonf a go, and using offensive language, but was always made to look like a fool and bigot as the coloured guy would help him, or confuse him by being more intelligent ?
At the time this was unheard of, so although they used derogatory terms, they were actually showing up racists for being narrowminded simpletons.
I may be wrong, but that was the way the nostalgic programs go on about it ? |

Rising Damp would be slaughtered in this day and age.
I think it's hilarious, but it was incredibly racist, sexist and homophobic all in one.
I didn't find it offensive. |

Tom and Jerry ... with the stereotypical 'Mammy' character 
I can still remember this being shown in the 70s, maybe even 80s though the cartoons were much older, and therefore had the (feeble) excuse of being from 'another time'. |

I think that was the really funny thing about Alf Garnett's character, a whole family could watch those shows with the older generation laughing with him and their children laughing at him with more than a few probably not even realising the other half of the family was taking it in a totally different context. |

Funny that. What they won't show now is real life and how regular people talk and feel. Whether it's right or wrong it's what's going on. |

Only fools and horses had quite a few references to the pxxx shop around the corner, although in that context Im not sure its actually racist, Pakistani shop these days just in case |

And the thing was, whilst the BBC's 1970s Minstrel Show was kind of touted as family entertainment, as in, 'what was wrong with a nice bit of singing and dancing?', the genre actually had its roots in 19th Century America where most minstrel shows also used white actors and basically 'entertained' by ripping the piss out of black people, portraying them as simpletons, criminals etc (that's a very concise explanation by the way). It - the Black and White Minstrel Show - was one of those things where, if you applied a bit of thought, it wasn't as 'harmless' as many wanted to believe. |
