So...
Three salesmen are on the road and need a room for the night. They stop at a hotel and book a tripple room at a cost of £30 and pay £10 each.
Later the hotel manager asks the receptionist about who's checked in today. She tells him about the salesmen. He asks if she remembered about the special offer on tripple rooms where the midweek rate is reduced by £5? She admits she forgot. The manager calls the porter and asks him to take a £5 refund to the salesmen.
The porter agrees and on his way, realises he has an opportunity to make some money. The salesmen don't know about the discount. He decides to pocket £2 and then knocks on the door and gives the salesman the remaining £3. The salesmen take £1 each. The room has therefore cost each salesman £9.
3 × £9 = £27.
The porter has £2 in his pocket.
£27 + £2 =£29.
Where did the other £1 go?
And no, I can't give you the 5 mins you wasted reading and thinking about this back! M |

Do a sum and another sum but then use English to deflect attention from the fact that they aren't the same thing.
Otoh... A man leaves his cows to his sons... 1/2 to the oldest, 1/3 to his second son, 1/9 to his youngest.
When he dies he has 17 cows and the sons don't know how they're going to split them up.
Then one of them says "I know"... He goes to his neighbour and borrows a cow so they now have 18
The eldest son gets 9 (1/2)
The second gets 6 (1/3)
And the youngest gets 2 (1/9)
And they give the neighbour his borrowed cow back . |

Is the answer 42?
Actually the room cost £25, the porter kept £2, so total 'paid' by the salesmen was £27 (£25+£2). They handed over £30 so hence got £3 (£1 each) back (£30 - £27). No lost £1.
Sorry to be a fun hoover |
