I'm consider getting mobile wifi as sometimes I've not been able to get online when I need to when travelling. Looking for experiences and any recommendations on the best router and whether package or sim only is good. I travel abroad too so thinking sim only might be the way to go? |

Yes but your phone needs wifi itself to provide the hotspot and its for the times that's not available. Afaik the mobile router creates a wifi hotspot to get round this. Can any techies confirm this? |

The hotspots and your phone as a hotspot don't work like that.
The phone is connected to the internet by 3g, then puts it on wifi for your iPad or whatever.
That's what the mobile hotspot things do too.
You can get USB ones as well, if it is for a PC, but they still connect to the internet by 3g. |

Yes, Bun has an iPhone and it doesn't let you do a hotspot, but I think that changed when she moved provider. I have a Samsung and I just switch on hotspot in settings and we can all use internet on iPads and PC, using my 3g phone, UK or abroad.
What is your phone? And what are you trying to let use the new hotspot? |

Yes, Bun has an iPhone and it doesn't let you do a hotspot, but I think that changed when she moved provider. I have a Samsung and I just switch on hotspot in settings and we can all use internet on iPads and PC, using my 3g phone, UK or abroad.

iPhone 6s on Vodafone and trying to set up hotspot for business laptop and international meetings by lync/Skype (must be on laptop not phone) |

Best bet is use your phone as a hot spot if you have large data allowance.
I get 16gb a month and signal.is the same as a mobile device so save money using the phone.
Once paired, you'll never know yhe difference x |

It's called wifi tethering, where your phone has internet access and you enable hotspot on the phone and connect to that.
I'm with EE and they allow it some of the cheaper ones don't but not many now but think because there are a lot of people who use it.

I know how to tether but my phone doesn't allow it if it doesn't have wifi itself. I have unlimited data and need to use it abroad too. Europe is fine as I have Euro traveller but worldwide would be expensive if I used my phone data package. |

Phones don't act as hot spots if they are connected to a wifi network , that would be pointless
A 3 or 4 g device needs to connect to mobile Internet first and then routes the connection via wi fi
Most smart phones have this function and the data plans cost the same as dongle data |

The whole point of tethering, is that there is no wifi available. Your phone goes on 3g then re-transmits it on wifi for your pc. Does it do the same problem when they are connected by usb?
Think it is most likely a network contract problem, they don't want you using a massive data allowance to download content or stream to your pc.
I'd check with vodafone, if the feature is just switched off.
If that doesn't work, you'd need to buy a usb dongle, but that needs its own sim card and contract / payg, so seems expensive if you've already got a good data contract on the phone. |

Ah that's makes sense. I'll try turning my wifi off at home and putting my laptop on USB as I've never tethered with a cable just to devices with no wifi or G connections |
