I think as long as you can understand what is written as you can above spelling is no big deal.
Spelling is not essential for people to communicate although some people consider it a reflection of someone's smartness which is totally wrong, many smart and successful people who are dyslexic struggle with spelling.
Who came up with the word dyslexia to describe the condition you'd think they would have thought of an easier way to spell it.
Grammer is another thing some folk get twisted about, the use of words like there, their and they're not too important for me as long as I can understand what someone is saying I don't mind. |

A lot of modern words have evolved over the years, just look at how Shakespeare and others used english compared to now.
You've got to have a starting point which as the guy says might be the English dictionary
The chances are that the guy who first used a word has been dead for century's so you can't ask him so just go with the flow |

Something is only as true as what we believe it is OP.
Forget about your spelling though. Just treat it like your moustache. It's part of you. . People will accept it. Some won't.
We're all different , I like people who accept different. |

I think everyone is taught the basics in primary school, now whether you can grasp those are a completely different matter.
If you're reliant on home schooling or your peers then yes you will go wrong if they teach you incorrectly. |

Sorry Seeside, you may be dyslexic but why all your posts have to be about the same thing is beyond me.
I personally find it strange when you spell one word right then spell it wrong again in the very next sentence, when you say you have a specific way of spelling.
I know some are horrible about bad spelling and some pander to you, but please give it up at times. And yes I am aware some will call me the big bad witch for this, but sometimes people, give it up! |

My teachers taught me the correct way! I was a big influence on teaching my children (reading and spelling every night)
I am sad you feel you were taught to spell incorrectly but I think it is more likely to be a type of Dyslexia.
I expect you went under the wire for addressing your problem.
Perhaps if you read more you would work out the right way to spell words.
You are what you are, was good to see you practice with that Dragon app yesterday. |

i was lucky i could read proper books by the age of 3, and that was taught at home. i've never thought anyone should rely on school only for teaching, or just one source for teaching.
right now i'm relying on myself for education, not as the source but, as the provider of an education for myself. |

OP spelling and grammar will be more important to some than others. If it doesn't bother you then all is good in your world. If it does there are tools that can help to some extent. |

I do genuinely agree though, for the longest time I couldn't get "their, there and they're" right, constantly mixing them up.
It used to bug everyone I knew to no ends as other than that my spelling and grammar are relatively good, so what I ended up doing was practising the different uses. Boom now I can use them properly.

the app doesn't seem that convenient. you can't have any background noise when using it.
i'm not anti-shit grammar personally but think it's a shame that app means you have to make changes to your usual routine to use it. |

Schools today are a bit more tolerant i think of those who struggle to keep up and go a bit further to help them try and catch up and get the extra help they need.
Back in my day you were shipped off to a remedial class where you either sunk without a trace or tried to claw your way out back to mainstream classes. Sometimes you got lucky with a brilliant teacher other times you had a teacher who looked at you as if you were a waste of space before you closed the door.
I now read with my 6 year old most nights, he gets homework from School (maths and language based) and he's only 6. Not silly fluffy homework either, proper sums and words to learn for spelling tests.
I didn't get homework till i started Comprehensive School!

I agree with you, school was like torture for me, I am also dyslexic, along with the fact Im born at the end of August so the youngest which makes a real difference in the class so suffered real bad at school.
Back in my day the schools never had a way of dealing with people like me, to that end I'd play about because nothing interested me and I'd be sent to stand outside the classroom. I think I spent 2/3s of my day stood in an empty corridor
My poor mother went through hell trying to tell the school I had a problem and it wasn't just me acting the fool. The schools stance never changed. She even enrolled me into a 'special school' on Saturdays to try and bolster my learning.
I left school with absolutely nothing, not a single grade, joined the army at 16 and after a few years they realised I couldn't read or write. It was the Army that put me through basic schooling, imagine how embarrassing it was for me sat in a class of non english speaking Fijians that were being taught "The black cat sat on the mat" but I did.
I then took it upon myself to study more and by the time Id left the Army had a level 5 foundation degree. since leaving Ive continued and now have a BA (hons) and am currently studying for a MSc. |

"Schools today are a bit more tolerant i think of those who struggle to keep up and go a bit further to help them try and catch up and get the extra help they need.

Well that sounds good I applied to go straight onto the parkes dept as a appentice and from there to college, the path I took has gone now as the show greenhouses I attended as a apprentice have all shut down which was a big part of my time when working on the different parks, so no one else would experience what I did in that sense which is a shame over 40 years ago now, used to mix our own compost after digging it out of the turf stack on site after steraliseing it then after so many barrow fulls we would add the other Ingredients which is what we used to pot plants and set seed in in the final Ingredient being john Innes we grew some beautiful plants thou I weakened by back when double digging at 17 still comes back after all this time but my love for the subject is still there and the memories then and since. |

Apply that same question to every thing!
How would we know what is real and what is fake? What is true and what is a lie? What is right and what is wrong?
I think I'd implode! I couldn't handle living in inception.
I know what I know and that is enough for most people |

Seeside,
I can only assume that the spelling police have been whinging about your use of the English language..
I still stand by my bunch of roses comment and people shouldn't jump to conclusion about others..
The English language is awful, a collection of many other languages that has evolved into the mish mash we speak today..
Your point is valid, it is the most popular spelling of a word which stuck, not necessarily the easiest way either..
I quote the immortal words of Christina Aguilera..
You're beautiful
No matter what they say
Words can't bring you down
Oh no
You're beautiful
In every single way
Yes words can't bring you down
Oh no
So don't you bring me down today...

he might be able to find people who would teach him over skype? for nothing.
i'm on other sites, i don't really use them now (an nobody knows i'm female on them so there's no favoritism) but ive had people offer to teach me computer languages over skype, and did let one guy help me a while back. they never wanted any money, they just enjoy teaching people.
not sure what sites you'd find someone who enjoys teaching english though. |

Sorry I know it is early, but birthday weekend and a few wines, but after 5 months of constant threads about being dyslexic, from the same person, it's like we know already! Why continue to harp on about it, hence give it a break!

he might be able to find people who would teach him over skype? for nothing.
i'm on other sites, i don't really use them now (an nobody knows i'm female on them so there's no favoritism) but ive had people offer to teach me computer languages over skype, and did let one guy help me a while back. they never wanted any money, they just enjoy teaching people.
not sure what sites you'd find someone who enjoys teaching english though."
That's a good idea, I am not sure where to look for those but if someone did it would be good. |

I have a pretty decent grasp on grammar etc, however I dont think I have the right skills or patience to tutor someone with dyslexia only because I do not have the full understanding of the different types (I know for some coloured paper and screens help them read without words jumping)
Helping my nephews with spellings though I'm shit hot haha.. I know my limitations unfortunately, if we could find someone to help others though it would be a brilliant way for people to give back and help. |

thanks, i am doing alright with my psychology course, don't really understand my teacher that well so struggling a bit there. when you get a good teacher you can understand that helps a lot. i was lucky i got a good one from canada years ago, and he was online on some forums. he taught me a lot about science, mostly the basics and evolution. i've forgotten a lot of it with having PTSD my memory used to be pretty bad but when i get reminded of some stuff i can remember a lot more eventually.
thanks for the encouragement. i love learning when i understand the teacher. |

yeah good teachers help a lot.
you should do that. it's really fascinating, especially if you've lived this stuff or seen it for yourself and can truly understand it.
i've been studying for about 10 years now, since my sister had her breakdown and i hadn't got a clue what was going on. then i studied a bit of neurology because it was part of that and i just found it interesting, there's a lot branches off from studying the brain and it's all interesting (to me anyway).
psychology is branching more into how physically we are made up and what happens in the brain there to affect us mentally. i used to think shoving people on tablets was a cop out but now i know how and why they work i don't think that any more. plus my sister told me what her tablets do and how they make her feel and she backs up what i've learned there. |

I get annoyed at people splitting infinitives and starting sentences with prepositions. So bad spelling and grammar - even my own - really grates on me.
However, I would never correct someone publically on their grasp of language. Because you don't know their story with that language. And to my knowledge I'm not an arsehole. |

When you suffer a debilitating affliction that has caused you stress all your life, you do start to obsess about it...
It doesn't help when people pick up on your mistakes and take the time to point it out publicly..
I suffer nominal aphasia, I cannot recall people's other place names.. It can be highly embarrassing and it has held me back (failed English literature due to not being able to remember any characters names)
I can fully understand why the op obsesses this subject, you would too if you lived it.

"
We are all different I guess as I find it pointless obsessing over things I have no control over. |

I'm a dyslexic dwarf so taking the piss is not big and it's not clever.
At 5'7 you are not a dwarf, so who is taking the piss?
At 5'1, I'm guessing this joke isn't the only thing going over your head!
"
So personal insults are your thing I take it, at 5'1 I am not a dwarf just very happy in my own skin, unfortunately personality traits can't be changed and people end up being t**ts forever |

"Sorry Seeside, you may be dyslexic but why all your posts have to be about the same thing is beyond me.
