If you had to evaporate a town in the uk and start all over again where would you start? Maybe Harlow or Bridgewater for me. |

Having been brought up in north Manchester I can honestly say Rochdale and Oldham are not the best places. We're always renowned for it when I was younger but they have got so much worse over the last 10yrs. That said some of the most honest and loyal people I know still live in both areas so every cloud haha. |

Bridgwater(note there is no E) is a good place to live. Where do you base your theory it is to be evaporated.
We are the home of carnival ..which is spectacular.
We have squibbing and street events on carnival day
It raises thousands of pounds for charity.
We have a big fair every year, people come from miles around for.
Low unemployment compared to some other places.
We have 2 theatres and a cinema.
We get big name bands play here including the scissor sisters.
Our high street is not all boarded up
We have a river and a canal and docks with boats in.
A lot of nice people live here.
So maybe you would like to rethink your early morning insult of my town and evaporate yourself instead.

"Ladies and gentlemen stand in awe, as I offer you the biggest turd swamp in the known universe! Behold the town of Newport! "
It's a city .
It's a Fab stronghold and I know loads of lovely folk (generally) who love there.
Used to be a vibrant place musically etc. Sad to see the decline of the centre.
I vote for Gloucester. Now, I know that there's far more depressed places, with much less to see and do etc. Parts nice too. It's just there's always a noticeable strain of banjo playing whenever I've been for a night out there.
I've also failed miserably to attract any women on said nights out. It's pretty obvious it's because I have no relatives there.
As Bill Hicks once said...."it's the kind of place where a man introduces you to his wife and sister.....and there's one person standing there".
Don't hate me - I'm sure it's lovely really and, for all the beauty of Wales, there's loads of places you could stick on the list from there. |

I think places are often more depressing when they're not great, but close to somewhere that is.
I used to find a certain town in Surrey depressing. It was perfectly nice really (if a little quiet and dull) and very affluent. However, my relatives there and their friends hated London and its multicultural, vibrant ways. They thought they'd get mugged by marauding gangs of homosexuals if they went there.

I also think seemingly crap towns have loads of interesting, nice people in and punch above their weight in producing talented people.

What about Wales
Easy tiger!
Wales does have some truly awful towns, but Wales on the whole is very beautiful and the good outweighs the bad.
This (for other areas too, not just Wales).
I also think seemingly crap towns have loads of interesting, nice people in and punch above their weight in producing talented people.
An example is Port Talbot - Burton, Hopkins, Sheen etc."
Very true - not forgetting Paul Potts of course |

It's got lots of Roman History including Chedworth Villa but last time I went I couldn't work out how to get out of the town road system. Maybe they never let you leave ! |

Liverpool has been mentioned a couple of times already but as I live here I'll also put it forward, the others haven't given reasons, probably cause they just go by the negativity and stereotypes the city has brought.
For me I'm fed up of the place selling itself on football and the fecking Beatles.
The city is 800 years old but all it fucking bangs on about is those two things, apparently it was voted kindest city in the UK recently, who voted for that shit!
And breath ....... |

It's weird really, you come around the bend in the M4 and see the stacks in the steelworks and I know I'm home. It has the comforting feeling. It needs a kick up the arse to get going. Never really sorted itself out after the mass loss of jobs from the steelworks |

Also....Bradford is the worst place I've ever driven."
Bradford has bad outskirts like anywhere else. But the city is honestly not that bad, nice museums, a new shopping centre, some decent new bars. Plus it's close to some really nice places and the Sales. |

Terrible place.
there are worse places but it's up there, the view across the bay is one saving grace
As its looking down on Barrow ??
You need a bloody good telescope to see that on a good day..can't miss the mountains of the south lakes though. "
To be fair my opinion is based on visiting around ten years ago and I swore I'd never go back.
Run down, grey and some extremely dodgy areas.
Hope its improved!
But yeah, guess it does have the views (of other places!) so not 100% terrible.

"If you had to evaporate a town in the uk and start all over again where would you start? Maybe Harlow or Bridgewater for me.
Good lass

I think Port Talbot looks beautiful - well, at night it does. It a deprived town, but you can be in great countryside in a few mins.
I'm going to stand up for Swansea. The Luftwaffe decimated the place and it never recovered. There's something happening now though - the previously horrible High St is undergoing a renaissance, with cool small businesses, cinema, bars etc. It's a collective effort and The Guardian did a big piece in it recently.
There's also good restaurants etc now. Add in the Mumbles as a seaside destination and The Gower's world class beaches/surfing down the road and it's not all bad at all.
I know loads of people there - many have moved from trendy bits of London and abroad. They love the place. It's weird - it looks bad in parts and has a bad rep, but it has..something. |

Good and bad everywhere. I live in Oldham and the area I live in is nothing like the areas portrayed in the news (it's good enough for Paul Scholes).
So it's a subjective thing. But I'd say anywhere south of Doncaster should have a 10 metre wall built around it,then fill it with water. |
