"I have experienced this, though not recently thankfully.
This is a great help

I saw a clip of this on something else. I'll have a proper look later.

"no but then I'm not hugely high achieving.
Has there never been a time when you thought you were winging it and someone might call you out on it?
"
Yep. Professionally. I upped my game and worked my arse off. |

I also realised pretty much everyone feels like that at some point. It's the great unwritten secret of being a grown-up. According to my mum, anyway. And she's wise. |

"I spend my life winging it. ..but I'm not sure that's the same thing! "
In some ways yes because if you're succeeding you're devaluing what you do. Just a thought. |

I wouldn't say succeeding as such....just not sinking! |

Not sinking might be success. You are devaluing what you have achieved by framing it in terms of not sinking rather than swimming along.

Only when I have been winging it "
That's a talent and/or skill too.

Wise she is. [I need a Yoda emoticon here.]

"Do you experience this?
Do you experience this, OP?"
I did for a long time. I was a high achiever from a very humble background. I had people wondering how I had climbed to that level in the time from my where I started. It left me wondering too, but with age and experience I have realised I was just damn good at what I did.

I'm very glad to hear it, not least because it suggests there's light at the end of the 'imposter tunnel' |

There is.
The other lesson was that I realised that I was just as good, and sometimes better, than those who appeared (some loudly proclaiming) really confident in their abilities. |

I agree. I'm specifically employed nowadays due to my ability to wing it. |

There's glimpses of that peeping through at the moment. Some encouragement is going a long way too. |

please elaborate "
It's the feeling/belief that you will be found out for not really be the right person for the job; that the front you are putting on won't/can't hold.

I've had this a number of times but not as a diagnosable condition. I've often pushed myself in to situations where I have to stretch myself, sometimes more successfully than others. I think it's also quite natural for us, as don't remain static as individuals, we're always changing and growing. Sometimes we don't recognise how we've moved and who we've become. |

So true.

The other thing that strikes me is how we often aren't as confident about ourselves as we probably deserve to be - I think this is partly cultural here. We obviously carry aspects of ourselves around inside of us from when we were much younger and different to our present selves. That younger self would naturally feel like an imposter, whilst within a more mature self and contemporary situation and role. |

This strikes me often too. Confidence in ones ability is seen as a poor trait to possess and self deprecation something to be admired. |
