As we seem to be taking a trip down memory lane with a few other threads, what food do you remember having as a child but not so much these days.
Mine is lambs hearts and Mr Brains Faggots. |

Chocolate cake, with pink custard.
My mums awful bolognese, but it was cheap and nutritious.
Batter scraps from the chippy who gave 'em to us for nothing.
Free sausage rolls from the bakers. Instead of throwing them out at closing time, they'd dish 'em out. First come, first served. Us kids used to race for the shop at school kicking out time. |

Heinz chickbits.
That's all I ever wanted as a kids just a tin on its own no chips or anything.
They became hard to get but a shop near my grans still sold them and every birthday my dad would ask what present to get me and I would always say "just chickbits"
I was a weird child. |

Nearly all my memories relate to sugar - Nutty bars, Fry's Five Centres, Dairy Milk chocolates but in a bar (can't remember what it was called), Old Jamaica, Spanish Gold coconut strands, Cabanas .... oh, and Cydrax apple drink which I believe is now annoyingly only available in Trinidad and Tobago of all places
Apart from that, stuff like Findus Crispy pancakes, spam fritters and Fray Bentos pies - though my main childhood food memory is my mum's truly dreadful cooking, whatever it was (she was like Ria from Butterflies, another blast from the past, anyone who remembers it will know what I mean). |

Those crap cheese and tomato pizzas that would come in a bag of 10 and similarly packaged frozen mousse.
But what I'd do for a lemonade sparkle...

Quatro. Bloody loved that stuff. I also miss worcester sauce Wheat Crunchies. And they used to do some kind of cheese straw efforts in a packet like a giant long cylindrical cheese moment. They were ace. And cheese moments, the king of cripish snacks. Those triangular orange juice lolly things you used to have to freeze at home. The Magnifico cornetto. Jesus, it's a wonder I survived childhood and my teenage years with all the shit food I used to love. |

Bubble and Squeak (usually made on a Monday with Sunday dinner left overs).
Corned beef and bacon hot pot.
Sugar sandwiches (definitely won't suggest these to our kids)
Banana and sugar sandwiches.

My mum used to make wigwams - a pile of mash in the centre of the plate, 3-4 sausages on their ends to emulate the frame, then beans right around the base.
Yes, it was basic sausage mash and beans, but when she said we were having wigwams, there was an added excitement |

Chips, cheese and gravy. My high-school lunch everyday. I have tried it again since but unless it has the rubbish school chips and crappy gravy then it just doesn't have the same feel.
We also used to get the batter scraps for free. They were gross.
We used to live on very cheap instant noodles as a child too, I dislike instant noodles as an adult.
Salad cream on toast.
I eat much better as an adult ha ha.

The chocolate manufacturers have a lot to answer for downsizing things and keeping them the same price .nestle remove 2 or 3 cnocolates from their tins of quality street every year .so will there come a time when we just buy an empty tin .bring back the Aztec bar |
