Just looking for a pat on the back or a gee up, but after working my whole life with no time without work, I was made redundant on the 6th of Feb and I'm kinda lost in what I should be doing. I have done my CV and have applied for a few things, and have had 4 tele interviews and 1 face to face, with 2 more face to face this week, but I'm feeling lost.
Any advice on how to keep my chins up (Mr here)  |

but now working again
just keep applying for jobs you know you can do your local job centre can help with any retraining aswell

Not a nice feeling. Been there myself four years ago.
I was one of five that should have been made redundant but one of my colleagues had to retire early due to ill health.
After finding out about her I decided I wasn't going to get stressed or worried about being made redundant "I had my health and could go and look for another job, she couldn't".
I think my message is
" remain positive, don't let this get you down. See it as a new beginning".

My own brother is in the same boat he's being made redundant this Friday after 40yrs working in the same company the odds on him getting another job at his age 63 here in ireland are non existant he's going to be lost for sure keep up your chin OP and keep looking hope you find new work soon |

With a bit of luck you walked out with a tidy sum in your back pocket.
So now think about all you have done in your working life, then think about what you really want to do, and aim to use half that sum to achieve it.
You are financially stronger, and have real world experience. Use it to chase the dream. |

Happened to me few years ago. Big shock. Have you been in touch with Dwp yet? Make sure you get your entitlement while you look for new work. Personally I use agencies who specialise in my line of work. |

I can sympathise, it's an awful place to be..
I was made redundant during the last recession.
It took almost 8 months for me to get an interview so you are doing well.
There are plenty of jobs around at the moment, maybe consider doing something a little different, many industries are crying out for staff, some quietly, like the defence sector.. For obvious reasons..

My brother got terminated with immediate effect 2 weeks ago

I want to make it clear it wasn't for misconduct. It was 2 jumped up reasons but because he is under 2 years he has virtually no rights
Because they haven't fired him properly and there are some other issues he is taking legal action against the company, they don't have a disaplinary procedure either
It has been stressful few weeks for him at least but he is in the same boat looking for a new job whilst he works with his solicitor.

Both of us have been made redundant in the past. Me twice Mr N 6 times.
Look at what you need financially and see how long you can realistically last without a job and work out what you need to earn vs what you would like to. Work out what if any benefits you're entitled to and claim them. Register with any career specific agencies in your area if you haven't already and send your cv on spec to any relevant companies. Continue doing what you're already doing.
You're bound to feel a bit negative, it's a huge blow and shock to the system. Maintain a routine, keep busy (Mr N used to build things and took on the majority of the house stuff) have a look at the free on line courses available that might help you update your skills but most of all view it as a temporary thing. Do some things you had no time for when you were working too. It isn't all bad you might find that life gets better.

"Nicecouple" summed it up well there. The best thing to do is to make a plan financially. Make a list of your monthly outgoing and see how long (in months) you are covered by your redundancy package and any emergency savings you have, from there you can plan what you need to do and by when.
Above all in less than a month you have secreted telephone interviews and some face to face ones too, that's an amazing start in a short period of time! |

you were not made redundant, the job you were doing was. It was no sleight on you, it was the job. You were not replaced by a better person.
That was just about the only positive thing I took from a redundancy course, be proud, it was not you, it was the job. Whoever was in that job would now be in the same position as you.

Chin up op. Lots of great advice on the thread. I've just been through my 3rd redundancy and was really feeling despondent about job searching this time. I applied for loads of jobs and didn't hear back from most. I got just one interview and got the job. Just goes to show that just when you think it's a waste of time, something will come along. Keep at it and good luck. X |

Agree totally.
I was made redundant after 25yr with same company... Effectively they gave me a bag of money to enable me to do whatever I wanted to do. Set up my own business and never looked back... Much more enjoyable, much better salary, fewer and more flexible hours (so got my life back (and got to play here more often!) ... Wished I'd been made redundant sooner as it was the kick-start to a new era.

To update this, I start my new job on monday 13th. Will need to use all my redundancy pay to keep me going until the end of april when the first pay comes in, but hey its a job and i can stop worrying now. Thanks for everyones kind words.
