Who thinks that horror movies from the 1980s were pretty cool?
I have some good favourites depending on the sub genre. Here are my favourites by sub genre
Werwolves: An American Werewolf In London
Witches: Warlock
Aliens: The Thing
Demons: Evil Dead |

They were pretty cool back then when I was a teen but then there wasn't the technology etc that we have today. The scariest one for me back then was Nightmare on Elm. Scared the crap out of me

Yeah it is funny how the first Evil Dead movie was made especially on a very low budget. The second and third movies went for the horror comedy route after that which had some pretty funny scenes |

Love 80s horror movies scared me to death as a kid tho I watch them now and just find them funny. Tho I prefer watching them compared to today's horror movies which are rubbish.
But yeah the SFX where terrible like watching the ending of nightmare in elm street you can actually see the mannequin being dragged through the door window .

Any John Carpenter or Tobe Hooper film. Any of the Italian Giallo films.
I remember a film called Xtro and another called Evilspeak that were popular with horror geeks at the time. |

I'd say that was the golden age of horror. Especially with people calling for then to be banned etc. Made them seem even more scary and Shocking.
Nightmare on elm st, zombie creeping flesh, child's play, critters are some of the ones that stick in my head.
I used to love going to the video shop and looking at them on the shelves. |

Yeah I guess back then religion played a major part of peoples lives one of the reasons behind exorcist being banned. Which in return brought a lot of attention and hype to the movie.
But yeah I there are some classics in this thread.
Any horro movies buffs abke to help me after the title of a movie I watched as a kid the only scene I recall is a watermelon or similar vegetable / fruit in the car and then some tentacles came out of the watermelon to kill the driver. |

I think we (my friends and I) made the films more exciting because we were underage - ordering the films to be delivered Then trying to find someone who was either 18 or looked 18 to answer the door This included films like Porky's and Lemon Popsicle
Although we were very promiscuous we were still easily scared by these horror films.

Basket case. Low budget, bad actors and effects, it's so bad it's good.
Other horrors I liked from the 80's were Halloween, children of the corn and I'm not sure if it is strictly classed as a horror but aligator was ace. |

The Thing, I hate horror films but I watched this classic when it first came out and I'm glad I did, it was groundbreaking in terms of special effects and has stood the test of time to this day I feel.. |

Op you’ve listed some really good ones I actually liked a film called ‘Vamp’ starred Grace Jones a bit of a cult film. But I also think with ‘Get Out’ or ‘It Follows’ the genre has certainly changed and in some cases (as the two I’ve named) improved.
Horror has long since been ignored by the Oscars or other award shows, Rosemary’s Baby to The Shining to Texas Chainsaw the list goes on ...J Horror another impressive sub genre of Horror.
Also have a penchant for the Hammer Horror Films as well

Yeah. Horror has definitely changed over the years and we do get some good ones now and again. Sadly the horror movies in the past years always seemed to have a murderous psychopath or a ghost/demon as the antagonist. Other recent horror movies that don't have these types of antagonists are either sequels, prequels, remakes or reboots of horror movies made over 20 or 30 years ago and most end up being terrible.
The new IT movie has been a good decent horror movie I've seen this year and best of all, it's not a remake and the antagonist is a inter dimensional shape shifting alien that feeds on fear.
What I like about the classic horror movies is that there is a variety of villains and not just some killer or a ghost and it is sad that variety has dwindled over the years. I've always blamed the Twilight movies for being not only degrading the vampire and werewolf mythos but also destroying the chance of a vampire or a werewolf movie in the future. |

I think Mark Kermode made a great point about the Twilight films that there just isn’t a glut of horror films in which the main hero is a teenage girl or that the filmakers are trying to reach out to that demographic, it’s not to my taste (only seen two of them) but it’s good that everyone is being represented not longer after,The Hunger Games was released that also allows Teenagers to see Girls can be heroic as well.

Watched just about every horror film made in the 70's and early 80's.
Got to the stage now they are more comical than horror
I now hate anything that has zombies, vampires, monsters etc as they are mythical creatures
I prefer psychological movies that can actually happen, like some sick psychopathic family (Rob Zombies Devils Rejects) or the first Saw movie. |

Too many American slasher films.
Like I've worked the doors in Glasgow and if some sad arse with a mask and a knife approaches he better know how to use it cause if. it he is going to require an operation to have it removed from his arse.
