Heart rate

I have a snazzy sports watch (although not that snazzy as it doesn't have a built in HR monitor!) and bought an admittedly cheap HR chest strap for it. It used to work fine but the battery died and its been lying at the bottom of my gym bag for some months.

Yesterday I bought a new battery and linked it up again. As I synced it with my watch I think something is a tad broken...... My resting heart rate, just sat on the sofa watching TV was 215!!

Now I know I'm still a lardy but but I do exercise almost daily and ran 15 miles at the weekend so it definitely is broken right?!

What should my resting HR be?

No way that can be right an average resting heart rate is about 60- 80

215 would be incredibly dangerous so I'd say broken is correct

I think the true figure will depend on various things really but anything under 70 would be good.

I used to track my sleep and it would be around 45bpm and when I'm resting and awake it is usually between 50 and 60 - just as a reference.

You'd know if it was doing 215 ! You'd be ready to collapse. It's broken, especially it changed its mind to very low.

Resting heart rate varies a lot depending how fit you are.

I took it manually and it was about 74 lol

Just made me laugh last night. I tracked an activity on my watch just sitting on the sofa and I spent 94% of the time in the sprint HR range

If it's been at the bottom of your bag for a while, then I'd suggest you clean it with mild soap and warm water

It'll only be spiking like this if the contacts aren't good.

Also moisten the HR strap before fitting it

I remember my dad being in hospital after having a heart attack and the staff being extremely worried about his resting heart rate of 40 being too low. He does not exactly have a svelt physique! Eventually they concluded that it wasn't anything to be concerned about as he had done a very physical job for his entire working life so was extremely fit underneath the fat

I run with quite a high HR, although the Garmin I have is very hit and miss, easy runs seem high and visa versa.

My resting HR is currently 57 when running prob averages at 175/185 something like that.

175/185 is way too high for someone your age if it is during a run. Check the monitor and your real HR and look into MHR for your age.

Sometimes the best kit has glitches - I had a similar 210ish last week, which flipped to 70 a minute or two later and this was on very expensive equipment. Manual counting is reliable and your friend - as you did later. And keep your electronics as dry as possible, to sustain performance. Gym bag sounds a little damp

When I hit the gym my heart rate often reaches 180 BUT after a min it's back to normal resting rate.

I'd be slightly concerned if it reached that high though lol
