They're going to try by linking a vast array of telescopes across the earth to take a picture not so much of the black hole (as you can't see it, duh) but of the bright ring of light fringing a dark feature, as Einstein predicted.
The light would be the emission coming from gas and dust accelerated to high speed and torn apart just before disappearing into the hole.
The dark feature would be the shadow the hole casts on this maelstrom.
