Who knows anything about the rules for writeoffs?are garages allowed to keep your car if its been classed as a write off?what first appeared to be bodywork damage now appears to be more as they have stripped the bumper off.currently waiting on the outcome. |

It depends what category of write off it is
But if it's A (unrepairable) it gets scrapped
If it's B (unrepairable) body work scrapped can salvage parts
C repairable but repairs cost more than cars worth. You can drive car again as long as you repair car ( you'd pay for repairs and have to complete various forms )
D repairable but costs of repairs and transport of vehicle more than cars worth. As above |

If it's a or b the insurance company will deal with getting it scrapped
If it's c or d and you want to keep the car , the insurance company will pay out for your claim then sell the car back to you |

The thing is my local garage would not charge me the rates this garage is estimating because it's through insurance they try to bump up the price of the estimate. |

You are allowed to choose who YOU want to repair your car. You can negotiate with the insurance company, agree a price they are willing to pay for the car to be repaired. Then they give you the money and you get the car fixed. |
