Do you think a deal was done with the government to drop the council tax rise referendum..... And if so...should the rest of the country not get the same deal? |

I totally agree...and I think the right wing forumites on here must agree too....as they are as tight lipped as Teresa May on answering this one  |

I missed the news today completely so forgive my ignorance, but...
Council tax raises are usually a political one anyway (with motive I mean), as the organisation itself would always want the extra income (especially as central government has cut most funding).
I think pretty much everyone can expect to see the maximum rise of Council tax this year, from all departments it goes to (police, fire, county and borough (if applicable)).
As far as I know that has always been 5%, so the I think the threat of it being any more is probably actually the red herring.
Apologies - I may have the wrong end of the stick and I've missed the news in favour of a bottle of red. |

cliff notes time...
1) council's are allowed to raise council tax this year by 2%
2) they are allowed to add another 3% on that IF all that money goes into social care
3) they are allowed to raise it higher than that if they want to.... but it must be decided in a local referendum
so.... surrey proposed a 15% council tax increase as they say their budget has been cut by 170 million in the past 5 years....
yesterday the council called off the referendum at the last moment.... and agreed to a council tax rise of 4.99%
and that brings us to today... and the text messages....
there... up to speed..... |

no... not quite.... the power that surrey had was the amount of high positioned tory government ministers it had.... and it wouldn't look good if tory controlled surrey county council were the first to try this....
could you imagine if lets say, liverpool, or newcastle, or sheffield tried this..... you would hear the laughter from here!!!!  |

Councils have historically always been compensated by Central government for not raising Council tax, but I agree it does seem like some kind of deal was done. |
