Happy Birthday neighbour

Wellingborough

89 years old, yesterday.

Carrot cake, candles, a Birthday card and lots of tea.

Her husband died 3 years ago; not a card, or a telephone call from her daughter.

A visit would have been out of the question; that's reserved for Christmas Day, when she takes her mum to the deep fat frying purveyor of beer just down the road for a generic book early Christmas-type lunch.

A 2 hour visit; then 82 miles back up the road, until next Cristmas.

No wonder old people are often lonely.

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

Isn't the daughter also "old people" too? I will be if my mum makes it to 89.

I don't know enough about the daughter's situation to pass sweeping judgement, but good for you for baking.

Depends on her age when she has children, 30 years + would make her daughter in her 50's, hardly 'old people'..

The elderly can be lonely / isolated for a variety of different reasons.

Age UK have a befriending & telephone call service, might be worth finding out about this for her.

I'm not going to judge the daughter. She may have very good reasons for having such minimal contact with her mother.

Fair play to you for being so kind hearted and thoughtful though

My dad was 90 yesterday. He has been a cantankerous old fart for over 40 years. Although I live a good 4 hours away, I still visit About 3 - 4 times a year and phone once a week.

I am sure if a lottery win was waiting for them, people will find time to make a visit. So many make excuses, then live with regret.
