Got my first formal inter_iew on Thursday since I was told I was redundant at the end of last month.
Only applied for one job and have got myself on a shortlist of 5.
I'm thinking of a total change of career at 54. I'm fed up of the stress and grief of trying to hit sales targets, and dealing with staff that really don't give a fuck.
If I'm honest I wish I could afford to be a gentleman of leisure |

Well, first of all I respect you for attempting to alter your professional life. It takes a lot more balls than people give it credit for.
Secondly, well done for getting so far already and lastly good luck with the inter_iew !
I hope all goes to plan |

Thanks for the sentiments, it really is appreciated.
To Wishy, it's a total change of direction.
I've always been in industrial engineering, and am hoping to do something where I can employ my DIY self taught skills.
Looks like I've convinced them enough to speak to me, so we'll see how it goes. |

I haven't mentioned this before but I've been a telecoms engineer for decades and after last year when I was on stand down for 7 months I decided a change of direction was needed. I've been training to be an electrician for the last two months and I'll be a fully qualified Part P City & Guilds sparky by October. The bonus is that being a qualified sparky there would be even more work available to me should I ever return to telecoms. |

Good luck Jack for the inter_iew and a change of career could be brilliant for you. I did so and am still taking exams, sometimes I think I'm too old for the stress but I go get bored easily so I like the fact I'm learning constantly |

i admire anyone with DIY skills
anything involving me + stepladders, wires, sockets, nails, screws usually results in a trip to A&E |

"I'm fed up of the stress and grief of trying to hit sales targets, and dealing with staff that really don't give a f**k".
Just done the same thing at 50, mate.
Good luck, we all need to earn money but it's a great feeling when you enjoy what you are doing.
It took a while to get there, having the support of a wonderful lady helped.
Ian.
P.S. Fingers are crossed for you! |
