"It will cost more to import now as we are out of the single market." We're not out of the single market yet. I don't believe there is a real shortage either, it's just an excuse for the supermarkets to raise prices and make more profits. I've just been in my local asda and they've got so many iceberg lettuces they've reduced them to 15p each ![]()

"It will cost more to import now as we are out of the single market." Why do we need to import? Plenty of market gardeners. I suppose it must be different in London or other big cities, but I have friends with allotments who give me so much seasonal fruit and veg, I have to pass a huge amount along to other friends. Post-war Germany clawed back to where it is now by promoting buying German goods and produce over imported ones. That, coupled with a strict re-cycling regime, helped the economy to recover. We just need to re-educate ourselves for when we shop. I have seen (massively expensive) strawberries in the supermarkets, but I will wait until I can get them locally. Cheaper and taste better.

"It will cost more to import now as we are out of the single market." Sorry to disappoint you but but Germany is still in the single market and we have the same problem here. Not seen any rationing yet but Peppers Cucumbers, Lettuce, Courgette, and Broccoli are in short supply and prices are sky high here. The cause is floods followed by snow in the Almeria and Murcia regions of Spain which produces around half of northern Europe's needs.

" I grow potatoes in potato sacks - it's really fun when you come to harvest them as well as tasting great! Tomatoes too in a tub or grow bag on my patio. If you plant lettuce in an opened up grow bag, stagger planting times of the seeds so that they aren't all ready at once. Had failures with carrots though....i also keep four chickens and now getting (now the days are getting longer) three eggs per day. "...and yet tonnes and tonnes of food is thrown away every day. A couple of weeks a go, The Real Junk Food Project in Leeds intercepted 600 tonnes of food that was destined for landfill, in just one week. There is so much surplus food, they have even opened a 'supermarket' on a pay as you feel basis. There is no shortage, there is over supply, poor management and rediculous laws surrounding the processing of food." Do they give it the homeless or people in poverty? ![]()

"more of this problem is yet to come, world population is out of control. weather changing, farming is on the decrease wait for about 10 years chocolate shortage is coming expected before 2030 by manufactures. and food shortages will come at some point unless the world changes its population and farming. "What ever happened to just eating seasonal veggies ? " And paying the real cost of it? We were talking about this 'shortage' over dinner last night and explaining to the kids that we didn't have a) half the choice and b) fruit and veg out of season growing up. Other lettuces are available and no one is going to die if they can't get hold of an Iceberg lettuce in February.

However, we are in the "hungry gap" where the last of the autumn veg has gone and the new veg hasn't yet grown - it lasts until March traditionally, when the broad beans and spring cabbages are ready. You will still have storage crops though, which includes all the root crops harvested in autumn/early winter, and fresh you will have kale and cabbages.
