I'm joining a gym today.
(Because I've got too much money and time to kill obviously )
For those that visit a gym to keep fit, how long do you normally visit for? Can your workout be done in a set time? Does it differ if your doing the cardio or strength exercises?
As you can see I know nothing. |

I couldn't stand being a member of a gym it would drive me crackers.
I had a weeks free pass for a smart one near work...... The exersice machines all have little T.V's on them! The pools were really short too so no good for swimming. The spa area was nice though.
All my fitness is outdoors and I love it |

I'm constantly active, like you I don't think I 'need' to go.
But, I've always been the fittest person in the group I socialise with.
My age is only going in one direction and would like to keep my levels where they are. Rather than the prospect of my health declining and finding it hard to get it back.

I'd go and see a trainer there, they'll be able to guide you with what you want to achieve. I normally do an hour, which includes some high intensity training, some weights, warm-ups and end stretching.
Enjoy |

I'm a member. I usually go 4-5 times a week and my workouts can range from 45 minutes to around 75 minutes depending on what I'm doing that day.
I do zero cardio and I train for hypertrophy (muscle building) all the time. Simply because that's the phase I'm interested in at the moment but in time I will train for strength too.
I have split days and my workouts tend to change alot because I have yet to Sir down and do myself a proper workout programme. My shifts and life are too hectic at the moment ha ha.
Feel free to ask any questions and I'll answer to the best of my knowledge. I am a few weeks from being a qualified PT.

VB goes to the gym (heading there shortly, after the monsters are disposed of).
She attends various classes and makes use of the pool. Aiming at a general all-around improvement rather than specifically working towards anything.
Myself... I exercise my mind all the time! That counts, right? |

I've joined many gyms but the club I joined last June is the first one I've really stuck at and got into the routine of exercising almost daily. I update my routine every few months and vary it a bit to rest parts of my body as I'm going 5 times a week now. I try to keep it to 45 minutes so it doesn't take more than a hour out of my day. It's a mixture of cardio and weights that works the whole body with an emphasis on repetitions rather than weight. With that and the help of a 5:2 diet I've lost 3 stone since last June |

I visit a gym. If I do just cardio I do approx an hour but if I do weights as well then I spend half hour with cardio then half hour in weights doing 4 sets of 10 reps per machine. I also do boxing training which believe me gets you fitter and more in shape than any gym in my opinion. Good luck |

Urgh, douchebag. I'm sorry, you came across one of those PTs.
I can promise you that there are plenty of amazing PTs who would never dream of saying that to you and are actually concerned with your physical and emotional wellbeing etc.

All depends on what you want to achieve. Body building, being a muscle man is a hefty investment not only in time but also changes in lifestyle and can be a financial strain.
I have recently discovered cross fit and I'm preparing for my first competition, I find it very rewarding and it gives me exactly what I need in minimal time, 40 minutes of madness is so much better then lengthy training schedules. I highly recommend it. Good luck and don't forget your protein |

I'm not a fan or gyms at all.
Especially for a cardio workout- imo the best cardio is running or cycling outdoors.
For stength training I guess gyms are kinda essential though so you can use there good kit.

Everyone seems to point to around an hour each time, which can easily fit into my life.
3hrs a week is easy.
I should put that last line on my profile. |

In that case, for you I'd probably do 5 light weight warm up movements. Just to warm all the joints up, loads of people neglect warm ups, but you can't train if your injuried.
After warm up do 4 weighted exercises focusing on one muscle group, such as back, chest, shoulders, legs. But with those 4 exercises try to make them compound exercises, instead of isolation. (If you don't know the difference then just give it a quick search)
Do the 4 excersises 5 sets, 10 reps. If the weight gets too heavy towards the end drop it down a bit, or keep the weight and reduce reps. But ideally you want to be hitting 7 reps
After you've finished the 4 excersises, move to a rowing machine/bike/running machine and do around 20mins at whatever pace you can.
In total, if you push yourself hard, you should do it all within 1hr 45min.

If your new to training . Join a gym that's not a big commercial one who just want your money. A private medium sized gym with proper trainers to show you the ropes and a programme / food plan to suit what you are looking for .
Enjoy yourself. I didn't start training till about 4yrs ago and didn't think add enjoy it but a hour 3/4 times weekly is ahold stress relief and clears the mind |

I hate the gym. I find it boring and intimidating.
Much prefer to get out in the hills with my dog and/or kids and take photos.
I'm still fat (i like my food too much sadly), but nature is also good for the soul.
On the plus side, you might meet an attractive lady at the gym and get chatting over the water cooler. It happens more than you think! |

Don't sign up to lengthy minimum contracts, as an inexperienced gym user, is my prime advice. Start short term, which might save you lots of money in the longer term, if interests change etc.
I'm at the gym and do classes as well as cardio and weights - it's part of my healthy life approach.
When you know what you are doing, you can be in and out in an hour. Much shorter trips are possible, if you just wanted to do a bout of cardio work. Some are busy at peak periods, so check them then, as they may be too slow and unworkable for you.
Get staff to interview you for your goals and give you training/teaching and a tailored plan. Review your goals and programme regularly.
Shop around, take all the free trials, to evaluate the places for your needs. And avoid long contract periods as a new user. They sue for unpaid months if you leave or stop paying. |

I would thoroughly recommend joining a gym, for me it is an excellent form of stress relief and something where consistency and dedication produce clear, indisputable results. It can be as casual or as serious as you want it to be but the main thing is to find something you genuinely enjoy be it bodybuilding, power lifting, classes etc. As long as you genuinely look forward to your next visit to the gym it can be both a mental and physical enhancement to your lifestyle. |

I like going to the gym and doing outside exercise find it's a good combination for me to do both, I swim every weekday morning before work do a Pilates class and aqua aerobics once a week. Find it great value especially during the winter months / bad weather when you can't go walking / cycling outside and then when the warner weather comes can still swim before work and go walking in the evening.
The gym doesn't suit everyone would definitely recommend if the gym allows either a months/3 months trial if not and there's the slightly more expensive option of paying a higher monthly fee with no contract if you're not sure you're going to like it that way not tied into a years contract |

We both attend as often as we can. This is mainly in the evening after work. Both feel that it keeps us in reasonable shape. The length of your workout depends on what you Are after.
However we find an hour to hour and half works well.

Statistically 40% of people who pay gym membership hardly ever go to one.
They join because of peer pressure and good intentions but lose interest for various reasons.
But they still refuse to cancel their membership as they don't want to appear to others to have failed at ther efforts to keep fit and also to admit to themselves that that they have failed and ruturned to being a lazy bastard
These members are ideal customers to the gym owners though as its money for nothing.
