"damn.......who then....Clapton?...Brian May?.........am struggling now...."
If you're including Strat/ Les Paul wielders it's going to be a toss up between Clapton and Knopfler although I'm never sure how much of what we hear comes from the fingers and how much comes from the electronics. There's probably other, less high profile players who could be included here.
Acoustic players would have to include Martin Simpson, Martin Carthy, Davey Graham and Tony McManus - not exactly household names but worth checking on youtube.
Classical guitar comes down to Segovia, Manitas de Plata and Julian Bream.
I could spend years just listening to any of them, trying to make a decision.

I watched that concert too and Santana is one of the greats but I don't think you can quantify who is the best above all else as each great guitar player is responsible for guitar classics that stand apart in their own right. I tend to not allow myself to get drawn into the 'who is the best' debate because I honestly don't think it's a question with a definitive answer. |

Superb band, love Soul Sacrafice especially.
I took my mum and Aunty to see them live a few years back in Bournemouth, always remember it, some rotten sod broke into my Ford Capri during the concert! |

I'm a Mark Knopfler fan myself.
Although did anybody see Bert Weedon on an episode of Wheeltappers and Shunters? Marvelous. Helen Shapiro and The Settlers were also on it. |

I can remember watching a Beeb documentry about the roots of rock and can recall superb footage of BB King and Bo Diddley, both showing extraordinary finger dexterity on the fast boogie riffs.
Don't forget Robert Johnson too, the man who supposedly sod his soul to the devil, at the "Crossroads" in exchange for mastery of his guitar.
Robert Johnson is universally acclaimed as the single biggest influence of most of the "names" listed on this thread. He certainly carries that mantle for Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Jimmy Page |

I had the honour of watching chatting with and sharing a couple of beers with the late Isaac Guillory on a few occasions. A phenominal talent and a true gentleman who was very much the unsung hero on albums by well known artists, worthdigging out some of his stuff if jou can find it.
I second Peter Green too, nice to see him back and healthy. |

We went to see Peter Green's Splinter Group top billing with John Mayal's Blues Breakers, a couple of years ago at Plymouth Pavilions.
It was a great night, and don't forget, John Mayal can hold his own as a guitarist, keyboard player and harmonica player |
