I'm moving Friday but chucking a load of stuff but my mattress is the problem, it's disgusting I've had it almost 8 years and I've flipped it over so it's both sides. Stains where my daughter was a baby/toddler and peed in my bed, the worst things are all the blobs where I've come through over the years (sorry to be disgusting) but how can I hide it for it to go out the front to be collected by the council guys? |

We always worry about this problem. The only sugestion i have is to get some string and fold the mattress in half with the worst side hidden and tie up with string. Thats what we have done. |

Get an old bed sheet (that your happy to throw out, cover one side, then bend in half, with said sheet on outside. Then keep it folded down with brown tape. |

I'm just gonna keep it indoors till they come and run it out quickly when the coast is clear.
This is stressing me out thinking about it, probably the whole thought of moving is stressing me the mattress in particular. The whole reason I've not chucked it sooner is cos of the stains! |

Take it out at night and put it in front or someone else's house lol.
But easier to cover it with black bags and sellotape. Just cover one side and lay it down on the floor and put other things your getting rid of on top.

As a woman also, I would think nothing of it, it happens unfortunately. I've come on many times in the night over the years  it's not like mattresses are cheap..can't afford to replace every time it happens  X |

Its natural not dusgusting, these things happen. Period stains are normal, not nice but normal

In the middle of the night, tie it onto the roof of your car, drive the streets until you find a skip and stick it in it..
I believe it's the law that all skips needs to have a mattress in them, so you'd only be helping someone out that might be breaking the law..
If you get caught doing it, just tell them that Mrs Spanishbrunette told you it was fine.. |

I will be buying a new bed but my new house still isn't ready yet. All of my stuff is going to storage and my daughter and I are going to stay with my mother till it's ready. Won't be buying a new bed till I have an idea when my house will be ready. They knocked a chimney breast out to move the stair case and loads of things have gone wrong! I'm not panicking though. Will save money living with my Mam! |

When you get your new one, get a soft blanket and a mattress protector. Wash, then final rinse in lots of fabric conditioner. FC repels fluid somewhat so put the blanket and then protector on the mattress. It's also far comfier to sleep on.

They're old stains from not long after I gave birth and had practically a whole year of irregular heavy lady times (politest way I can say it!) I haven't had an accident like that for a long time but I will buy mattress protectors for this new one. |

When I was sorting my garden we found a mattress buried, it was folded up with string. Firstly I was scared to what was inside, second I was mortified about taking it to the tip. I also took my neighbours as theirs had just been sat in the walk way for months and due to the rain they stank! So trying to avoid the men at the tip because I was embarrassed, as why would any normal person take someone else's stuff, well I did and I was seen and offered help, I made it clear they weren't mine, but even still doesn't mean they believed me. |

Sweat stains and dribble stains can't be seen, that's what goes a horrible yellow colour, normally noticed more on pillows. I think it's vile and when I notice it I buy new pillows. My ex used to sweat loads and it was disgusting.
When you're bleeding heavy, like after a baby, sometimes you don't notice until the next morning that you've leaked through and by that time it's soaked into the mattress, I've never been able to remove the stain, only made it fade in colour. |

What if you're asleep when it happens and by the time you wake up in the morning it's too late. I've always tried to clean them but they just went bigger and faded slightly. Maybe I should have spent more time scrubbing my mattress in the mornings but I had a new born baby to see to. |

Maybe I have my priorities wrong, but when I wake up in the morning my last concern is to scrub my mattress. I rarely have a period now, but if I did I wouldn't think right I need to scrub my mattress. I'd be up sorting my kids out, probably give the mattress a quick pay down with a damp sponge and cleaner, but until I get home in the afternoon I don't have the time to clean it straight away. |

A little tip for anyone with this, the last time it happened to me I had face wipes next to me and tried them just to get to it a bit quicker as I was late for work, and it really did bring it up cleaner. |

You will ideally be rolling the mattress anyway and sealing it with duct tape so very little would show and tbh the guys collecting it are in no way interested enough to be examining it.
They want to have it easy to pick up though on the van.or skip and on to the next job!

For your new mattress get a topper. They are lovely n soft to sleep on n go in the washing machine. I was mine on a cold wash once a month n it's like new. Xxx |

Get yourself down the charity shops and buy a king size duvet cover and use that to cover it. I'm sure asda etc do them for a couple of quid this time of year to get rid of last year's stock. |

It's the neighbours. I know most the people in my street, my mother is my neighbour, my auntie is my diaganol opposite neighbour, I'm gonna be back and forth this street for ever and having a grotty mattress outside my house just feels embarrassing, I can't help it.

God there are some precious folk about on this site.
It's mother nature. It sometimes goes through mattress protectors and a lot of products are rubbish at getting the blood out. It might get most out, but there will still be evidence.
And not all of us are a Kim Woodburn waiting for a domestic emergency to spring into action with our marigolds.

it's not about being perfect. It's about basic hygiene and cleaning.
I'm sure if it had happened on the sofa, it wouldn't just be left for all to see... why should the bed which you sleep in be any different? 
Anyway, if the op is that bothered she can use carrier bags to cover it as has already been suggested. |

You can get rubberised sheets.
From dunelm amongst others.
I had one when I was pregnant in case my waters broke on my new mattress!
My 4 year old has them on her bed in case of accidents.
It really isn't that difficult. |

Blood doesn't, it just kinda fades and spreads out.
The only way I know of properly "dissapearing" blood, is by spitting on it and keeping it moist until you can chuck it in the wash (using biological washing powder), this is because the enzymes in your spit start to digest the blood.
I suspect that you can't generate enough spit for a period kind of stain anyway, and you can hardly bung a mattress in the washer. |

I totally disagree with this as period blood DOES wash out. Fact. As does blood after you have given birth. If the mattress is stained enough to cause embarrassment, then tough. Deal with it or clean it. Simple. |

I think it depends on how quick you tend to it. A bit like anything, if you are quick enough you can catch it before it goes deep. Not noticing it for a while is harder to shift, but it can be done but as I am always last out of the bed and make it as I get out, it used to be a quick spot for me. |

I think there are lots of women who wash their clothes, bedding, and other things after an accident, who aren't worried about the state of their mattress. I think the op even admits she didn't clean it... and has soiled BOTH sides over the years.... I actually cannot believe people find this perfectly acceptable and part of being a woman?! If she had given birth at home, in get lounge for instance, the place would have been scrubbed. |

if I woke to a blood soaked mattress id scrub it. Go to the shop and find something which takes out blood stains. Use hot water and bleach.
I would not leave it, and continue on without preparing the bed. I also wouldn't flip it and carry on..
each to their own. Obviously all the ladies who leave blood on their mattress and just carry on to do so, are very different to me! But I'm fine with that

That's fine to say that, I've never found any stain remover products to work on clothes let alone a mattress that soaks things up.
Like I've already said, if rather a small blood stain that has faded, through an attempt of being washed, than a sweat/dribble stained mattress. They're marks you can't see until it's set and come back up to surface to leave a horrible yellow outlined patch. If people have the money to continually replace their mattress then fair play, but not everyone does. |

I often have to remove old mattresses. Yes i work for the council boo.hiss...and yes ive seen it all. Worst one ive moved was one that someone had died on..all bodily fluids on that. Another was where someone had been stabbed. Dont worry about it!! |

I keep a gallon of spit exactly for this occasion. It's not hard to keep your mattress stainless, just be less of a slut. |

Where do we stand on fake tan stains? My mattress has a shroud like outline on my side of the bed. I'm not sure if this makes me a negligent sloven or not.
I'd go for the cheapo fitted sheet option, you can get one in Asda for a few quid. |

Right I'm about to take it out the front. It has to go where my bin bags go and everyone in the street knows I'm moving so they'll know it's mine. Poured some vodka on the stains which seems to have faded them even more. Folding it in half and going to put my little sofa on top of it! |

If it's as knackered as you say (sounds like my old one) you can roll it up and tape it
Then if you must tape a sheet round it
1. Rolled far easier for you and the guys to move
2. Less on show
You will ideally be rolling the mattress anyway and sealing it with duct tape so very little would show and tbh the guys collecting it are in no way interested enough to be examining it.
They want to have it easy to pick up though on the van.or skip and on to the next job!

The bulge in my cheek was my tongue OP. Like you, I have life pressures and many priorities above de-staining my mattress. Also I have never seen a used mattress without some sort of staining - that's why you're throwing it out after all!

I know, it's not like I pooped it and rolled around in my mess, I did try and clean it when it happened but it just gets bigger and fades slightly but it's still there. Anyway what I did was rip the platform balance that was under the mattress on the divan and I rolled the mattress in half and tied it with the ripped valance, strategically covering the two blobs with the sheet! Also put the sofa on top of it. Looks a right mess out there, 14 binbags full of crap but I've chucked some outside my mothers house.
The gypsies are coming at 10am to take my old treadmill as well so hopefully everything will be gone before removal men get here. |

You slept on that mattress! Well I had two on top of one and other didn't I, remember I said it was like princess and the pea. The mattress on top of the hanging one was quite new and no stains but I took that one to the tip myself cos it was clean! |

Believe me once it's knackered and springs are popping through with big dips in it no matter shere ypu lie or how you turn it...it's do able!
My new one on the other hand takes me an hour nearly to turn over because it is firm and new and nice still...once I've done that job I'm pooped for the rest of the day! "
I've never had a mattress get to the point of springs popping through and sagging in the middle.
My turning technique is now down to about 20 minutes. |
