From today's Independent:
The owner of a beauty salon offering haircuts, nail painting and even spray tans for children as young as 16 months has said: "Who am I to say no to parents?"
The Trendy Monkeys salon in Brentwood, Essex, opened on Saturday catering specifically for under-13s.
The youngest child brought to the opening was a 16-month-old.
The salon is owned by former catalogue model Michelle Devine, 28, who believes she is providing for a growing number of style-conscious youngsters.
But the venture has attracted criticism from campaigners who say it may force children to grow up too quickly.
Mother-of-two Miss Devine offers a range of Princess Parties including manicures, make-up application and facials.
Future plans include ear piercing and spray tanning, if there is demand from customers.
She said that, although she would not encourage it, she would spray tan a child if asked, adding: "Let's face it, little girls just want to be like their mums."
She said: "Girls are conscious of their image from a young age. Whenever I have my nails done my daughters have their nails done as well.
"This shop will be specifically aimed at children and will cater to their need to feel good about themselves and take pride in their appearance in a fun-filled environment."
She added that television show The Only Way is Essex had put the county on the glamour map and her store would capitalise on that.
Maxine Chinowaith, 11, a pupil at St Helen's Primary School in Brentwood, was among the first youngsters to visit the salon.
She told the Brentwood Gazette: "My dad came home from the gym and brought me home a leaflet, and that's how I heard about it.
"I like a lot of pink, and I will definitely come here again. I think I will try the make-up next time."
But Claude Knights, director of child protection charity Kidscape, said that such businesses risked sexualising children.
She said: "This could send out a dangerous message to young people and harm their development.
"This parlour just serves to highlight the dangers we are campaigning to stop." |

Yeah, that was the key thing that the show said to me about Essex people - 'glamourous', aren't they? Glamorous as two short planks, most of them..
(Clearly, no offence intended to Essex people here, just to the awful bimbos and wankers they put on that TV show) |

I read this article this morning. I also saw an article where a mother had given her 7 year old daughter a birthday present...a voucher for a boob job.
The irony these stories were underneath a story about children as young as five being married off in some third world countries to older men.
Robbing children off their childhood in any way shape or form is just so wrong, and terribly sad.

@ sassymiss - so true, childhood id for being a child, not a sexual object, a worker, or anything else "adult"
@ knockers - could it be dodgy journalism to get a story perhaps? |

I don't agree with sexualising children, especially clothing and I'm glad that some companies have taken certain items of clothing off their shelves, padded bras for 8 year olds, tshirts with slogans such as Diva, Party Princess, etc. I like to see little girls dressed like Alice in Wonderland or Dorothy and not imitating Katie Price.
However the article quoted is an example of the press extendimg the truth a little. It says the youngest who attended the opening was 16 months, not that the baby had had a spray tan.
Things like this weren't available in my day but it didn't stop me dressing up in my mums shoes and smear her lipstick all over my face, not that she encouraged it of course. Little girls will imitate but I don't think businesses should actively encourage it. |

Yes, to be fair, I have just seen her on Channel 5 news saying she does not offer spray tans |

Some people need to get a grip. Ok, the spray tanning is a bit much but only vain people do that anyway. It's better than getting skin cancer from too much exposure to the sun.
As for the haircuts, nail painting etc etc.. that's what little girls do fgs!! Dress up.
I took my son for a haircut two weeks ago. Salon n everything. Am I shit dad now?
So someone is making a few quid, they aren't going to dominate the world and populate with orange people with stupid designs on their fingernails.
Storm in a teacup. Jesus! |

Thanks for this thread, its given me a great excuse to have a good moan,I think its outrageous how some parents put the wrong values into their kids ,the over sexualisation of children and some kids being treated like designer trinkets to drag behind selfish parents really gets on my tits i dont mind telling ya.
I think any beauty treatment should be banned on kids unless under the specific advice of a doctor (to cover the tiny amount who need it)..i think the parents who do this sort of stuff should have to go to parent classes to learn that what youi put into a child when young is invariably what you get back as an adult .
i may be wrong ,i may be right ...but its how i feel .

£90k on shoes for a 5y/o is what I'd call outragious. Any parent knows just how long the kid will be in those shoes and to spend that much on them is just plain foolish.
I thought Tom Cruise was a scientologist anyway, so how come he has enough dosh left for such extravagance? |

I used to walk home from school with my nose stuck to the 100 foot long fence that lined the alleyway to our house when it just been creosoted. I love that smell. Even now it whisks me straight back to my childhood. |

We had the stereotypical mad scientist with hair all over the place as a chemistry teacher. Many's the time he exploded something in the lab and another teacher would stick his head round the door to see if the daft muppet had incinerated himself, us or both. |

There was a great show on the other month call Stop pimping my kids. It aimed itself at the various areas of life that do just that. From the shops selling heels to tots to music moguls who show show explicit videos. Maybe we should send the presenter round there to do a protest. |
