It's a logic/reasoning puzzle, more than plain maths.
There's a pattern that you need to find and then it makes sense and you arrive at the number 40.

Their solution involves introducing multiplication into the mix. First, you multiply the first number by the second number. Then, you simply add the product of those two numbers to the first number. Like so:
1 + (1 x 4) = 5
2 + (2 x 5) = 12
3 + (3 x 6) = 21
8 + (8 x 11) = 96
However, if you did manage to work out a solution for the sum yourself, there’s a fair chance you came to the answer 40 instead. Here's how you come to that answer:

I think most people realise that. .....it's a bit more interesting than having a discussion about who appreciates who or who's on who's hotlist or who wants to kiss/fuck/bury under the patio etc

1+4 is 5
2+5 is 7 add that to the above 5 and that makes 12.
3+6 is 9 add that to the 12 makes 21
8+11 is 19 add that to 21
The answer is 40 |

Which could be represented as
