My cat is getting old. She's an adorable chubby ragdoll cat. Thing is, she is becoming more and more clingy: following me around and laying with me all the time. ls this just because of her age? ls it healthy? l know l can google it but it's always good to listen to other cat owners. |

mine is 10(i think), she has always been clingy...but not receptive. All of a sudden in the last year, she likes her belly rubbed(something I'd be scratched upon), while sleeping on my chest...FFS she's even kissed me lol |

As cats become older they do get the same problems we do, eyes not as good, hearing starts to go.
If she is starting to loose one of her important senses she could be using you more and more as a lifeline.....or it could just be she wants more snuggles
If you are concerned it never hurts getting them checked over and say about behavioural changes |

How old is old, some cats crave more attention as they age. It's also possible that there might be a medical reason and it's always worthwhile getting a check up if her behaviour has changed dramatically in a short space of time. |

my cat still see's space pirates in the corner..plus her tail is still some kind of space tentacle out for revenge...the best IS, she knows I have a mouse...she knows I press a button, she knows this button makes a cool light....she knows she must chase it. |

Rag dolls are naturally placid and clingy I think anyway. My ragdoll is only five years old and I can't go to the loo or have a bath without her being there by my side.
But I recently had another cat who was very ill just before Christmas. And she is a reclusive cat but found when she was ill she became very clingy |

l prefer the affection a cat gives. Dogs are great but they like everyone usually. l like that cats are exclusive with their affection.

my dog started following me around when she got old. i think it was because she was going blind and kind of losing her confidence with that, she was also somewhat deaf as well but it was when she started going blind that she became clingy. |

....your got it easy lol.1 of ours tries to follow me to work or tries to get in the car when kitty goes to work and he also is a keen climber-we had to get him down from a neighbours house roof-he was chasing a bird up a tree and carried on upwards and stayed there till our neighbour told us where he was! |

I think it's a mark of trust and reliance upon you - perhaps because she's less confident/competent. If it's not a health related issue, which a vet could assist with: and I'm assuming her health's monitored anyway. Eyesight is an issue for cats as they age - they can use cat braille, as they feel around for known marks etc. But she's a socialised cat, so has put a great deal of trust in you and this brings about a certainty for her life. If you could add more interest into her life, then she may become more involved with other things. Regular play and exercise are good for her too - just as exercise is good for human mental health. Whilst they like routine and the opposite can be stress inducing, some novelty and change will be fine and can support keeping them stimulated, interested and engaged in what's going on around, other than you op. |

I'm by no means an expert but have had cats most of my life so can share some of my experiences.
I've noticed as my cats have aged their most dominant personality traits have gradually exaggerated. My eldest one is nearly 12 and he has always been very affectionate and cuddly. The last couple of years he has gradually become more and more so. We did have a very elderly cat who died 2 years ago aged 21. She was always very aloof and grumpy. The last few years she was fucking evil lol. If you walked past her sleeping spot she would try to scratch and bite you if you woke her up!
A dog loves you because you tell it to, a cat chooses who it wants to love. If your cat is choosing to be loving and affectionate towards you just enjoy it. |

Had a cat with the ex, gorgeous thing, all white fur and blue eyes. Found out she was deaf so always kept her indoors
She was always very cuddly with us all, especially me, as she'd sit on the back of the sofa and lick my head, grooming me as she saw me as the "alpha" of the house.
Since we split and I moved out though she went really cold towards my ex and spends most of her time sleeping on top of the wardrobe and only appears when she wants to eat or use the litter box.
Only recently she's started to sleep on my daughters bed at night but I moved out almost 5 years ago now so it's taken her a long time to start becoming loving again |

One if my cats did this when she was very ill before Christmas. Although she has recovered from her surgery she is still clingy with me and don't let me out of her sight and fends off the other four cats just to get all the attention |
