Hi, I have the mirena coil and have done for almost 5 years now..it has completely stopped my periods (well I've had 3 in 5 years).....but I know it doesn't stop them for everyone.
I personally recommend it but that's not to say it will suit you but I guess there's only one way you'll know

Same for me, had the mirena coil for 2 years now and only had 1 period. I had it specifically for heavy periods as well and didn't expect it to work as nothing else had. No problems now. |

My daughter has one and her periods are biblical. I'm on my third coil and, although my periods never stopped, it's great to not have to worry about contraception. |

I spent a lot of time researching this as I knew I didn't want the pill (too forgetful for all that) I was also torn between coil and implant. I chose mirena coil in the end as side effects such as weight gain and heavy periods were lesser than that of the implant as was issues with removal (lots of removal horror stories with implant).
I love the mirena, had two and about to have my 3rd. My fertility returned very quickly after mirena (another reason for picking it) and conceived in 4months. Sadly had a miscarriage and was extremely ill with it but I don't believe this to be due to mirena and is why I'm having another one fitted now taking a break from trying to conceive.
Had about 3/4 very very light periods in an 8yr span. Insertion and removal do hurt but only in as much as an injection followed by light period cramps the next day you've forgotten all about it. |

"
They stick out of your cervix so you can tell the coil is still in. I've had men mention it. |

The threads they use to remove it stay inside you. You don't feel them at all (unless you chose to with your fingers) you don't even know they're there. X |

They start off quite long to allow for different size cervix's. When fitting they are cut to a length where they hang out of the cervix just a small amount so if you need to you can feel it.
Obviously being on here I've met people of varying sizes and never had any complaints or been told they can feel it. |

Yes I have mostly got on very well with mine I didn't get it because of heavy periods etc but just so me and my partner don't have to worry about contraception X |

It's PCOS that causes the weight gain, not the other way round.
You really need to talk to someone with knowlegede of your medical history. |

As someone also with the condition, I know it can be helped (uncertain of the right word) by weight loss. But you don't get it because you're fat. |

I'm currently on my third implant and will be due to have it renewed next month.
It's the best thing I have had, even though when I first had it, it took about six months before my body settled with it and had mini periods every two weeks, but when persevered with, I certainly wouldn't look back, I hope that helps |

I got rid of my PCOS by losing weight. I know it's really difficult, but a change of diet really is the best way to stabilise it. Especially as it's insulin-related. Certain foods like salmon are very good for PCOS. I'd try that before going down the coil route.

You've basically typed what I was about to. Honestly, before the coil look at the weight. It's tough but I'm almost two thirds of the woman I was before. |

I'm a big girl (size 20-22) but don't suffer from pics but I have the depo provera injection which stops periods. But it's best to see your practice nurse really |

I've got a coil and have never had a period with it. Only one person has ever mentioned feeling the strings. I am totally unaware and have never felt them. I highly recommend the coil. My 21 year old daughter who had very heavy periods has one too.

So my periods have always been really painful, so at 14 they put me on the bloody pill which was embarrassing. The pill helped but after 2 years on as it runs cancer and the vain thing ruins on my family I should never of been on them.
I've been on the implant now since April and only had 3 periods lastin 2-3 days. The pain is still bad but of its that short I can't really can't complain. X |

It's amazing what a difference weight loss makes, right!? |

I used to weigh 21 stones. In June, it will be my tenth year of not eating carbs and besides the side effect of the body you see on my profile, nearly all of my metabolic related issues are gone.

I have had the implant for almost 5 years (changed once) and had it before my children too. In all those years I've only had two short periods. However, I do know that if you're overweight it can affect your periods so you bleed more, but so can the coil, my friend had one fitted in November and keeps having 3 weeks on 1 week off, doctors told her to give it a few months and see how it goes. |

I think that is where your problems stem from though is your lack of grabbing the bull by the horns.
You clearly aren't fond of the weight loss idea (only you know your reasons for that and it's not for us to question) but it *seems* to be because it's hard work and it is!
Also because you have had differing opinions on the coil and implant you don't seem willing to try and find out what is best for you. Unfortunately you will always get differing opinions the only way you will ever know is research and make a decision based on those facts and then if it doesn't work try the next best option until you find you the right fit for you.
Not meant to be harsh - just an honest account of my observation from this thread alone.
Only you, with the help of your GP can do anything to try and deal with this situation. |
