My OH has almost ended up in the doghouse with his bad behaviour...

He only forgot to do the yorkshire puds for dinner.... Luckily his mom noticed & saved him ending up in the doghouse..

what's wrong with saying "mom"? If I said the word "mother" she would know I have done something wrong or I wanted something.

This is correct. My Nan refers to her mother as her "mom" and I'm pretty sure she's not trying to affect an Americanism to act all cool. She's 90 for God's sake.
