Well I pulled a muscle in my back a week ago, and have been in real pain ever since, looks like I will be having a few more days of work, might try a few gentle stretches today, got a feeling it's a trapped nerve causing most of the pain. |

Onto week four of increasing lower back pain here. Heading into my third week off work sick. Using a hot water bottle, interspersed with a tens machine. Taking some seriously heavy duty pain killers with horrible side affects and not really noticing any improvement |

Get yourself to a spinal mobility class. Once you have learned the nine simple exercises, you can do them anywhere you can lie down. Doesn't even involve effort, takes twenty minutes. |

There is no real cure for back pain.
I've had back pain and sciatica for over 20 years. The only thing that really helps me is to keep moving. If i rest it just makes it much worse. On several occasions resting has caused me to become bedridden for a while.
Even though it hurts like hell to carry on as normally as possible it is the only way. |

You would know the difference between nerve and muscle. Recommend lay on floor and try fetal position slowly then star stretches. If muscular. And ibuprofen. Would def go see quack though because it won't go away if it is trapped nerve |

Go see someone who is qualified and has studied to be able to actually tell you what is wrong ffs, no point seeking advice from non medical people, no point been in pain and taken painkillers if you don't know what the problem or solution is |

Don't be fobbed off with paracetamol, ask for an MRI."
They wont give a MRI for a pulled muscle |

After a phone consultation with my gp I was given a prescription for painkillers and a sick note to last until they could squeeze me in for a face to face appointment. At said appointment I was given even more painkillers and another sick note and told to keep doing what I have been doing with the hot water bottle and tens machine. No explanation of what is causing my issue or plans to investigate further or come up with a solution to enable me to do my job.
Seeing someone qualified isn't always the magical cure that people expect it to be! |

Sadly because most GP's do not seem to be trained to diagnose and treat 'common or garden' back pain, god knows why not!!
You can try to get a recommendation from your GP or someone you trust for a chiropractor, osteopath, or physio and book direct, or ask your GP to refer you to a hospital physio dept who do have the power to organise further diagnostic testing if they want.
How exactly you need to treat it depends on what is wrong and that isn't that hard to work out with a process of elimination in my experience, though getting someone to 'put their money where there mouth is' is quite difficult and you seem to have to take responsibility yourself - drive the process forward and demand answers.
I ended up getting an inversion table which is enough to correct any recurrence as long as my bed is right - that has been a bit of an epic journey in itself!! |

I've googled the details of a local osteopath and will be phoning them tomorrow to book an appointment. It's not cheap but will be a small price to pay if it gets me back to work quickly as I only get ssp when I'm off sick! |

If that's definitely what it is. If pain goes down the legs then it could be something else. Just don't get fobbed off |

Exactly, which is why you have to almost demand tests |

For back pain without trauma you'll be looking at months of physio before you get an mri.
They won't give an mri for sciatica unless treatment has failed. |

Well the tests cost thousands and arent even conclusive in most cases.
And theres a lot of people after those machines. |

Obviously you know best
But for the record I suffered with serious back and leg pain. Was given paracetamol by the GP. I left it a bit and went back to say I wanted it sorting.
I had an MRI within a few weeks and they found the problem. I had 3 epidural injections to see if that could fix it but it didn't. It just kept the pain away for a few weeks each time.
I had surgery to remove the underlying problem on Dec 1st last year and I am almost pain free and able to walk
So I still stand by my words and say don't let yourselves be fobbed off

And more importsntly which agrivating factor did you hit to get the machine?"

My back pain was alleviated with a very intense sports massage, by a professional.
I hardly get any pain now, except when I sit down or sleep a lot.
I had been getting severe muscle spasms and sciatica, since I was a teenager.
I've since had an mri to check for osteoporosis, as I was found to have thin ankles bones, and it's not my spine.
I suffered for years with terrible back pain and sometimes spasms that would put me off my feet for weeks; barely able to walk.
Since the massage I've only had one episode that lasted a couple of days.

I suffered with acute back pain for over 30 years and didn't get anything. My gp took away the diazepam the hospital prescribed, saying it was addictive. |

That's my point, don't assume, ask them lots of questions and for a scan of some kind.
I was told mine was probably a trapped nerve but it wasn't. I had excess bone on my spine and that was crushing my nerves.
Bone is gone and so is most of the pain. I'm hoping the pain that's left will go away slowly as the nerves recover |

Well that's appalling if it was never investigated. I don't know how bad someone has to get - I mean some people need surgery etc., there must come a point where it is given urgent attention.

Im asking cause i got 18 months of high strength codine and for love nor money could not get an mri.
Mostly bbecausr im a young male with zero agrivating factors.
Annoyingly if i had HIV i would have actually been able yo get an mri |

Big part of the problem is theres so many scroungers/fakers who use back pain as thier excuse for benifits as it's so hard to actuslly prove or disprove that gps and the nhs is very reluctant to spend thousands of inconclusive tests.
Fortunately for me my company has its own physio, ment5sl health and other services.
So much so tjat if in my area you deal with the nhs mental health or physio teams they'll ask if you work there and tell you thst you're better off speaking to them than the nhs as you'll get seen quicker.
I know its not from any kind of coporate decency but simply the fact that lost production costs far more than medical care but still its nice. |

"Out of curiosity with this extra info did you have an xray?"
No, just the MRI and then the injections were done under CT scan.
Perhaps it's the postcode lottery thing?
I have learned over the years (ex had a lot of crap wrong with him) to be persistent and to tell GPs where you want to go. Not in a bad way, just in a polite way that shows you won't be fobbed off.
It probably also helps that I'm not a the GPs very often. So if I'm there it means something is really wrong. |

Yes, that's why I say if you know you really have a problem stick to your guns.
Once it gets to loss of feeling in limbs they start to listen. |
