Are you sure that's ham .
My ham smells lovely, though its not from a packet.
Although the real question is, how do you know a general smell of a dog fart? |

"Ham smells like dog fart when you open the packet?
Sadly not, but you are right, it does give off an initial pong.
And then someone thought....this smells like fart....I'm gonna eat it."
That will be me then! Hahaha |

I don't have to be posh, a good quality tasty ham in a Polish shop costs less than packet ham in big chain grocery shops |

"Haha jumping dog farts. Does she work in a ham factory lol
Really though they do put some gas in to preserve it. Nitrogen or sumfin.
I hold my breath when opening can't stand it! "
That would make sense |

Dog fart is a known preservative. Honest! I use them to keep boiled eggs fresh. Opening the jar can be an experience however.... |

there's probably an actual scientific explanation that involves chemistry.
don't they freeze meat for ten years? so it's like ten year old flesh that should have decomposed by now but has been kept 'fresh' artificailly. |

All meat has some bacteria ; which give off various gases; with packed meat, that gas is trapped in the packaging.
Non packaged meat has the air around it to dissipate the gasses:
If you leave packaged ham open for a short while, the smell disappears.
