Second thing is bananas. Take a look at The Real Junk Food Project. The Leeds branch intercepts so much food, it now has a pay as you feel supermarket. |

I try not to but I have to admit to forgetting about jars of pesto and pots of sour cream in the fridge. I rarely throw away bread and brown bananas go in the freezer and I use them to bake with. Any fruit and veg that goes off gets put on the compost heap so isn't wasted. |

I hate wasting anything, food is at the top of that list. I always cook enough to freeze portions rather than throwing leftovers away. I bake bread at home so only ever bake what we need.
It's scandalous what is thrown away by some. |

"There's gotta be some kinda health and safety bullshit regulations stopping it being put to good use"
No, but stupid people see the " best before" date on food and think that it means " throw away by".
Also the majority of people don't know how to store food ( e.g. Putting fresh vegetables in the fridge, when that actually makes them go rotten more quickly)
And yes, people overbuy stuff.
BOGOF. Is a major culprit; it should be renamed

I rarely throw bread away, as we don't eat it often. I did, however, throw away a lot of salad after Christmas, because I forgot to use it Boxing day and it went out of date, then I bought more, which didn't get used because I wasn't home to use it. I usually use it all except the celery. For some reason we never eat all the celery before it goes mushy and you can't buy smaller packs.
I sometimes bin potatoes, because we only have them once a week, as a rule. |

I hear that! I lived with as a family with two kids and the food waste was horendous, but that was down to impulse buying while other foods sat in the fridge going off.
The regulation things that I find abhorent are supermakets throwing stuff into bins, and then locking them to stop homeless/freegan types getting hold of it, and in some cases injecting meats with dies and things to make them inedible (cant remember where I read it but its gotta be on the internet somewhere). And most of this because of the best before date. (as if at midnight it suddenly implodes with mold). |

I'm quite good at not wasting food, but it does mean I eat some really random combinations sometimes. I never throw sliced bread out, if it won't get eaten before it's going to go stale it goes in the freezer for toast. |

Bread goes in the freezer and is defrosted when needed. Crusts usually go out on the bird table.
Have a wormery and compost bin so most food waste ends up being recycled. It's only the stuff the worms can't handle that ends up being thrown away. |
