Turbo trainer

So, Santa bought me a turbo trainer for Christmas. I've just been on and and could only manage 20 min! I'm at a loss as to why I found it so damn hard as cycling is not new to me. I found it really difficult to gage my speed so couldn't work out if I was too fast or too slow. Tried monkeying with the resistance to help to no avail.

I am a sweaty, disgusting mess, currently lying on my bed having a pity party

Don't give up. I find the turbo trainer a difficult thing to focus on and would much rather be out on my bike.

What sort of bike do you have?

I would suggest getting a a gear your happy with how it feels on the road. Mimic that amount of resistance and then just go for it.

Have you got music or TV or something to distract you as you cycle.

One of the horniest things I have seen since being on FAB was a women camming whilst riding her bike on her turbo trainer. She was only wearing bib shorts too.

I faffed on with my gears to get it right. Was watching TV but all I could think about was how hot and sweaty I was!

I've a specialized - she's very purty

The evil thing about turbo trainers is that theres no wind rush to cool you down. An hour on a turbo trainer is a killer, worse than 3 or 4 hours on the road in my opinion. Get a cycle computer with cadence though, you can use that on a turbo trainer to aid motivation.

I don't find much difference between treadmill and road running as I have the treadmill set at an incline to mimic being outdoors

But the difference between a bike and turbo trainer is insane!!

I've been looking at a cycle computer for cadence.

Maybe I need to invest in a fan

Have you seen zwift.com?

Maybe you could give something like that a go with a little upgrade here and there. Something to think abnout before buying a computer.

use a fan with it but when i used to race i never done more than 30 mins on one.

the fan helps prevent you overheating

You need a fan and a heart rate monitor.

I used to use rollers (with a frame).

Cycling with a turbo is harder for a number of reasons, I find it boring to sit and ride. It is more enjoyable to see the scenery move rather than watching a TV screen. I also found it soul destroying to clock watch to see how long I have been cycling, instead of going for a sprint for the next sign or something similar.

As you said there are very few computers that can be used with the rear wheel, so it is hard to gauge your speed.

I used to use a heart rate monitor and use interval training to mix up the effort.

Sprints, followed by high resistance 'climb', rest......repeat.

Have a look for cycling videos that instruct you on resistances as you spin.

I found the key was managing the boredom. Something I had trouble with on the trainer or on the road.

The road I find it easier, once I have my set route I then start to beat how long it took to climb a hill, how fast I descended, or top speed on a sprint, finally how long I took to do the full ride.

I'm on a mission to get back up to a max day of 125 miles. I have a large charity ride to plan and ultimately, do. I'm not fussed how long it takes, more that I get the mileage.

Yeah there is something about being outdoors. It distracts the mind

Used to use my bike on a turbo trainers but now I go to spin class five times a week. I find it stimulates my brain more, and doesn't leave the living room a mess...

Not every day, that's usually one day at the weekend. Weekday mileages were around 30-50.

I was taking part in a 400 mile, 4 day tour.

The next one is a smidge longer at 1000-1200 miles.
