Edinburgh

They had them on sale in Aldi yesterday... I was almost tempted then I decided they'd end up in the same cupboard as the dumbbells.

It's not rocket science to swing a kettle bell. Just adopt a decent grip and let your body and gravity do the rest

"No, no, no... it's a hip hinge."

This!!

Get on YouTube for tips on technique. Unless your balls hang to your knees the kettle bell should t he anywhere near them

And if your balls do indeed hang to your knees, tape them to your thigh

"Next question. How long do you swing it around for?"

As long as you can.

Most will do tabata style. So 30 seconds....rest twenty seconds. That's one set and aim to do ten min or so.

My instructor told me you should use the heaviest you can manage for the swings or you could end up doing harm. The weight helps the motion. I'm by no means an expert but enjoy it.

That sounds like it should make sense.

Heavy on two hand swing

Lighter on one hand swings

Same Weight or lighter in lifting as you see fit...all about the sets v time

Best workout ever.. hinging from hip

Warm up all over body before and after routines

Good luck

I never got along with kettlebells. I always find if I use a suitably heavy one, I end up aching where I shouldn't, ie in the joints rather than the target muscle, especially in lower-body movements (A kettlebell swing is definitley supposed to target the same musckles as a deadlift does).

People tend to try and use their arms a lot for a double handed swing but all the power comes from the hip thrust at the base of the movement which is why you will find with a double handed swing with practice you should easily be able to swing 32-42kg

Yep, its a Ham/glute/quad movement, a la deadlift as per my previous post.

Yeah agreed, I think it takes some knack to master at first. The trick is not to start too light. When beginning. I'd say 10kg is too light and encourages bad habits. Use of too much shoulder, when in fact the shoulders should be just pivot points and the arms should really only take the weight of the kettle bell at the base of the movement. 16kg is more ideal to begin with. And if thrusting from the hips correctly there should be an arc where the kettle bell is weightless from the base of the movement to the shoulder line. You shouldn't swing above this line.

Also it's vital to keep your core engaged and back straight all through the movement

I have one only dropped it once and thankfully managed to miss my feet.

I'm a proper weakling think mine is about 5kg but I really struggle to pick up any heavier kettlebells

I follow a 30 min workout on YouTube and I've never sweat so much doing home workouts. I feel rather embarrassed reading some of the posts above.

You've got to start somewhere. After all, it's all about the journey. Just enjoy yourself (in a sick sort of way)

I do really enjoy it, and a bit of boxercise but it's getting embarrassing when my children are stronger than me

The main sort of reintroduction program was referred to as the program minimum and required lifters to do 2 handed swings until they started feeling it, have a short rest and then go again. You were supposed to keep this going for 12 minutes and avoid pushing it to 'death defying'. Honestly though, 10-15 sets of 10 reps starting at the top of each minute is fine. The key, as I think somebody mentioned above, is to apply force forward, drive it from the butt and aim to perform a sort of standing plank at the top.

Yeah, I am that sad...
