I might be in a minority in thinking this is disgusting, but was just in my local shop and a bloke just came in, walked up to the young girl at the till and asked:
"Got any jam rags love, my Mrs has just come on"
The girl behind the counter was very embarrassed. |

It was the reaction of the young girl, I think she's only about 18, she was visibly shocked.
Seeing as they have brand names, that would probably have sufficed.
I can remember my mam sending me to the shop with a note as a child and I'd haul something home wrapped in newspaper. Was always disappointed that we didn't have a chippy tea! |

Eww...can't say I've heard that expression before. I don't understand the need for so many euphemistic terms for periods and menstruation related stuff, what's wrong with just asking for tampons or sanitary towels? |

That's my take on it. When I was in college, I used to work in a local spar. This one woman used to come in regularly, she'd always embarrass me somehow. Making suggestive comments, well one evening she came in and asked, under her breath with a wink, "gissa pack of dunkys love".
I knew she wanted to embarrass me, which she did, but when I got the condoms fron the shelf they weren't price marked! So I shouted to the manageress DEB, CONDOMS. HOW MUCH?" Said woman never embassies me again.
Not sure why I think that's relevant, but I feel this bloke deliberately wanted to embarrass the assistant. |

It's a very old term the victorians used before there was any such thing as sanitary towels and ladies would have actually had a stash of rags for that purpose. I wouldn't find it offensive as he is using it in its correct context. Someone once asked me if I was on my jam rag which I found not offensive exactly but inappropriate. It made me think they were immature.
I can see that if it's not a phase you familiar with, and particularly for younger people who maybe can't even imagine having to use rags, it would be a bit off putting. |

I've never heard of them being referred to like that. I probably would of thought he meant jammy dodgers or something and made the whole situation loads worse!!! But, really, what a dick ![](/icons/s/rolleyes.gif) |

I would have chuckled to myself. It's funny! The missus *had* just come on, and jam rags aren't exactly a derogatory term. What on earth is everyone's problem?
What was he supposed to do in this situation? Take someone aside and say, "Excuse me, but the missus is in...a...ah...delicate situation...women's troubles, you know? Could I trouble you for something that will ease it?" He'd probably have ended up with Evening Oil of Primrose
So you may not be alone in your delicate sensibilities OP, but I certainly don't share them ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

"Odd that he had to ask for them. They're on the shelves to go and get, not sold over the counter. " Which makes me wonder whether there was an intention to either embarrass the shop assistant or hiding his own embarrassment and trying to look cool.
Let's face it there are many ways of asking for said article if you are genuinely confident in asking. |

I assumed straight away that he was merely trying to project his own embarrassment on to her |

Why does he have to ask for "jam rags"? The men in my life don't have delicate sensibilities either, that's why they'd ask for tampons or sanitary towels instead of a minging colloquialism. |

He might have dropped a jar of jam and could not remember the name if the thing to clean it up ... that or just a bell ended who thinks he's a 'Geezer' and thinks it's funny to say 'jam Raggs', like a school kid would do ! |

I was aware of the phrase, I think the shop assistant was too. Hence her embarrassment. |

I suppose it's intentionality? He was quite gruff in the way he said it. I'd be equally as taken aback if someone asked for "shit roll". |

"Some people are too up front. Then again, maybe he had the hump, as he'd been sent to get them, some women use it as a way of emasculating their partners. "
How is it emasculating for a man to buy feminine sanitary wear ?
Does it make a woman less feminine if she buys some incontinence pads or similar for her husband ? |

A man might have to buy them if his wife is in hospital or is ill or suffers with agrophobia. I went into my local chemist to buy condoms once, only couldnt stop giggling because the young girl in there was always so snooty. ![](/icons/s/rolleyes.gif) |
