Is anyone else participating Dry January / Dryathlon, if so how about we do a support thread?
I know I'm going to need it if I'm to last the entire month or even through the 1st day... |

Nope! I don't drive usually anyway what with my fitness stuff however..
Meets, club visits and December are exceptions.
I don't drink much at all though. Maybe one or two.

I rarely drink through the week and if am staying in only have a few beers/vodkas anyway, But this last week has just been one night of drinking one day of recovering, I'm actually looking forward to a normal week |

I only really drink at meets and when I go out, there will be no clubs for us in January so we will have a very dry January... the lack of drinking anyway, not the other kind of dry

"To be fair I only drink on Fridays so it won't be a massive hardship for me but I'm planning on stopping smoking so I figure it'll be easier without wine.
It's Wineday today."
Yeah... wine Friday but I'm off work. I drink with a colleague on a Friday after work. |

"I was going to until I got a meet sorted halfway through. Are we allowed one day off? "
In Stoptober people could donate and buy a golden ticket for the person to have a day off the giving up |

Oh I won't be getting sponsored. Not enough people would donate. I'll just have a drink and pretend I didn't |

I am going to be good after New Year's Day but going to Amsterdam half way through month so will have a few there. Never drink in the week but do on a Friday and Saturday evening but doing a bet for charity to lose weight and will try to be good |

I really do want to try and do this ...but given I am attending 4 x 5th birthday parties as well as holding my own small person's 5th party within the first two weeks of Jan I suspect very highly that post party wine will be inevitable!!
But way to go Roxi and all else doing this! |

Ask yourself why it's hard for you not to drink alcohol. |

I have and the answer is I like drinking, I socialise a lot and drink plays a part in that.
I want to prove to myself though that I'm not dependant on it & have the willpower to give it up, a bit like I did with smoking.

I'm sure there will be an endless supply of sanctimonious high-grounders to help you in your quest Roxi.
Personally, I like a drink in moderation so won't be joining you. Cheers! |

"No. The whole idea is so utterly sanctimonious. I'd happily donate money for no reason at all. Smugness not necessary. "
You think I'm being smug, wow I did not see that coming.
The furthest act from my mind or my very being. If and it's a big IF I manage to pull it off it's for my benefit, not to make anyone else feel bad about themselves.
I just thought others might be doing this & would appreciate the support, a bit like the fit & healthy threads. |

I don't think that you are being smug.
I think the idea of not drinking in January as a money raising exercise by charities is extremely sanctimonious on their part.
Unless, of course, Dry January was actually your invention. |

I'm giving it a go! Frank hasn't been able to drink since the end of June & can't for a while yet.
My alcohol consumption has greatly decreased (less than 10% of what it was) so figured a month will be easy

I'm doing it because Frank is ill. At a time when I will probably really need a drink.
I'm not doing it for charity - I've already made a donation to the Lymphoma Association to aid research in to his rare type of NHL. Does that make me smug?

My reasoning is that I'm an adult and perfectly capable of making my own decisions as regards my health and wellbeing. The underlying assumption in having a "Dryathalon" is that we all probably drink a bit much and by taking part, we can not only raise some money for charity, but "feel good about ourselves"....
If you feel you need to drink less for your health, do so, and do it for yourself.
I'd donate to charities anyway, even without them attempting to patronise me, and as such, I feel it isn't nescessary. |

But like a lot of things in life Jimi we all know what we should be doing but sometimes the shove up the arse from a 'patronising' charity might be what some people need.

I could understand your point if the charity was alchoholics anonymous and somebody had sought their help.
If not, the assumption that we are all drinking too much and could probably do with a little shove in the right direction could almost be a textbook example of what it means to be sanctimonious. |

Dry January is Alcohol Concern, so I would have thought it isn't an assumption on their behalf, more like statistics....

The fact is the majority of us ARE drinking too much.
It's just a bit of fun, combined with helping people cut down after Christmas, and maybe raising money for charity. Slimming club and gym memberships shoot up in January too, but because it's not a 'set' month no-one notices. |

Elle magazine had an article in November on the benefits to the skin of giving up alcohol. Add that to the repairing liver, reduced calorie intake and money saved.

So far so good, I've managed a New Years Day get together where I was the only sober one standing, was quite amusing to watch others behaviour.
I've got a two birthday weekends coming up which are going to be tricky and I seem to have replaced wine of an evening with After Eight Mints but apart from that no other issues.

Unfortunately they still do. I've had a few "friends" say oh one won't hurt. Yes one does hurt an acholic. I think most people don't treat alcohol as a serious substance/drug as it's legal and so embedded into our culture.
There is also the British hijack of endeavours activity of suggesting 'just one' won't harm or derail you if you try to go without cigarettes, alcohol or go on a diet. Once you've had 'the one' then they move on to 'well, you might as well have another' and I really can't work out what drives that behaviour in otherwise supportive, sensible people.

I found that out today, my friend saying ah c'mon it's only a glass of wine it won't count. Well you know what yes it does count & stop pressurising me to drink. I keep getting detox don't work posts to my fb timeline too, i get most of its done in jest but it's not helping.

I have to say that the concept of "detoxing" annoys me for different reasons. I have a slight bee in my bonnet about the diet and fitness industry raking it in using concepts that are basically made up. Detoxing is one of these. "Detoxing" is done very admirably in your body by your liver and kidneys. Foods you eat or don't eat don't help "cleanse" your body of (always unspecified) "Toxins".... |

"Anyone else aiming for a whole year?
I'm thinking about it. I don't actually like alcohol that much, I just tend to cave to peer pressure and what everyone else is doing. "
I enjoy it alcohol, I have a large collection of whiskeys and bourbons but I want to achieve something this year and living a healthier lifestyle will help me do it. I know my friends will try and get me to drink but I think I'll do ok. |

"I'm doing it It's not for charity because I don't actually drink very much, but I did it last year and it's helpful having a reason that you're not drinking to just be able to say no automatically to anything alcoholic offered.
That's a good point by saying I'm doing it stops people around me saying oh go on have just a small glass.
Unfortunately they still do. I've had a few "friends" say oh one won't hurt. Yes one does hurt an acholic. Depends how you define "unhelpful" really - I'd sooner my friends told me if I was falling for sone scam (eg detoxing) than just told me what I wanted to hear. |

Dry January isn't a detoxing scam though, you just dislike it. My point is, there is nothing wrong with someone choosing not to drink alcohol in January. No one is being scammed. And having a rest from booze IS good for you. The entire point of it is that they hope for people to cut down on their alcohol intake more permanently after the 31 days are up. Health wise, that is a good idea. If you want to piss all over it because you think people are smug then bully for you. |

I thought detoxing was where you drank loads of lemon juice/ate loads of cabbage/ *insert other crazy low-calorie option* (and bought a load of unhelpful celebrity endorsed "suppliments") to remove mystery "toxins" from your body, that you rliver simply can't deal with... |

Yes some are being unhelpful, like I've told them previously it's not about detoxing it's about me having a break from the booze & proving to myself like I did with kicking the smoking that I can do without.
It's bizarre that some seem to act in an almost defensive way when all I'm doing is not drinking! |

I find the idea of dry January really interesting. I've never seen people drink as much as British people at a Christmas party (and I've been to frat parties in university! ), but then to follow up such a heavy drinking month with abstinence seems really jarring.
It's definitely a good thing to temper the heavy drinking that can often happen, but I wonder if the cycle kind of feeds itself?
Anyway, no, I had a cider yesterday so I'm not participating |

the first year I did dry January I found it surprisingly easy and it benefitted me (and my chosen charity) enormously.. and even though I was back on the booze within a week,i found I didn't drink nearly as much as I had done previously...
last year I did it again and again I donated the money I saved during January to charity, and lost weight and felt better...so much better that I didn't have another drink until mid april, and thereafter I didn't drink nearly as much as I had previously (and I would class me as a heavy drinker back in the day). This year I am hoping to stop altogether..
I will again donate the money I would have used on alcohol to charity again during January but after that its going into my holiday pot |

There are people who operate at those extremes; they will end their period of abstinence with a blow out. That's not good and can be worse for you than continuing to drink for the whole period, albeit not at that excessive rate.
Learning that you can enjoy social situations, or cope with feeling stressed or a crisis without alcohol is a good thing in my humble opinion.

*Bumping into the final week
How is everyone doing, have you managed to stay dry, notice any benefits from abstaining for a month?
Some days have been tough but I've found it easier than I thought I would even on nights out, just had to be more creative with my drink choices.
Benefits - sleeping better, lost a few pounds weight wise, saved a lot of pounds money wise.I have more energy, my skin, eyes & hair look better too.
Overall a success... |

"Still doing it and will be til 9th Feb. Downside is not sleeping great and coughs a colds all month."
Alcohol usually keeps people awake. You fall asleep at first but spend more time waking during the night.
Do you think the coughs and colds are keeping you awake? |

Well done! I did it too and I haven't really found it difficult. I've noticed that most of my drinking was just taking what was offered rather than actually wanting an alcoholic drink. Because I had a "reason" not to be drinking, people didn't offer, so I wasn't tempted and I didn't miss it. I have a couple of things coming up in February where it'll be nice to have a glass of prosecco or two, then I might stop again for Lent. |

I found looking at why I drank interesting too, has made me rethink my habits. Everyone assumes I'll be drinking tonight because I can but I'm not going to because I don't want to.
I was thinking of giving up bread for Lent. |

I usually do crisps. Bread is too difficult for me "
It's a toss up between bread, crisps or biscuits...

Just where I need to be. |
I didn't intentionally participate but I did have a dry January. I don't use alcohol as a relaxant. Im on a health kick so when I went out I had soda and lemon. I'm trying to give up chocolate but the lure of it is hard. |

"I think my January's been more boozy than Xmas so far, but there were good reasons and fun was had and I don't feel like getting that d*unk again for a while "
Nope, this has been my most alcoholic month for a very long time.
Although I plead extenuating circumstances and company. |

My last drink was on new years eve.
I'm not partaking in dry January.....I'm not a huge drinker anyway. I'd rather have a cup of tea.
Now if it was to give up tea for a whole month
Very well done to all those who took part. |

British Heart Foundation is asking people to DeChox for March and give up chocolate ( ). As Lent starts on 1st March I might do that this year.
