Might be investing in new MTB , probably hardtail in right terminology??

Bewildering choice available ,budget of £800-1000 ,to work with.

However, to be honest with you, I'd probably be going to halfords and buying a voodoo. Or having a look at my local merida dealer.

Need it for road, and to up n down South Downs need something reasonbly light but sturdy..

yep ,I'll have a look, my bike I have is a hard tail Giant...it has been good value 18 yes of use..

There will be loads of deals on "Last years bikes" starting soon. Wait a fortnight and you'll get a good deal.

You say you will use it on road & on the South Downs?

How rough are your local trails?

How about another option - a cyclocross or 'adventure' bike?

Drop barred for a more efficient ride on the road but with wider wheels/knobbly tyres & a wider gear spread for off road use.

MTB' are great off road (I own two full sussers) but horrible on tarmac. If I we're in your position I'd seriously consider one of the new gravel/adventure bikes. Similar to a cyclocross bike but a less racy position.

yeah I,ve considered those cylcocross bikes with dropped handlebars, not sure I,d get on with them and question suitability if country track gets a bit tough...

adventure bikes ?? Not knowingly seen these are any makes or models you can name..

just googled them , think I,d prefer more of a upright handle bar set up to be honest .,.,,
