Would you have faired well as one of the good, or been put to trial as a witch, in bygone ages? The trials and twisted logic that inevitably found people guilty were barbaric of course. (excuse the spelling here) |

I wouldn't have stood a chance .... with a lifelong fondness for multiple black cats who I talk to, two extra (albeit teeny tiny) nipples , being an atheist and a tendency to speak out against injustice (i.e. being a 'mouthy' woman) ... I'd have been hung, or ducked, for certain ... |

people were put on trial mostly because other people accused them of witchcraft rather than anything they did, so any one of us could have found ourselves accused of turning in to a hare and jumping out of the window.
I don't expect I would have been around long anyway because I had a black cat until recently.

a friend of mine who is African asked me if a stray cat that came into her house could have been a witch. She's an educated and intelligent women but her fear was genuine. I'm not sure if the death penalty still applies for witchcraft. |

Yes, l saw a programme on the Gaelic channel about the plight of Albinos in Southern Africa. They are murdered so often and their limb are sold on the black market for black magic and they also die so young from skin cancer. Those counties are SO backwards. lt was so sad. |

It's nothing of the sort some or most of these people are the most intelligent in the world, that are unfortunately oppressed to the point of fearing what we see as a very small thing. Unfortunately due to war and money hungry dictators these people are less educated and its frankly simple minded to think otherwise. |

There are plenty of people from first world countries who harbour "weird" views. You only need to look at the conspiracy theories that abound.
I wouldn't call my friends country of origin backwards. Impoverished in parts and lacking in many of the things we take for granted for sure.
Her deeply held beliefs are no more backwards than mine. |

Yes that's it. Blame the Chritians. Most charity given by Christians and the religious is devoid of religion. And notice you only attack the Christians despite half of Africa being Muslim. How did a Arabian religion get there then? |

If you sink and drown that means you are not a witch. If you floated it meant you were a witch so they fished you out and hanged you or burned you at the stake. Seems it really was a no win situation if you were put on trial for being a witch. |

Luckily Matthew Hopkins was "Outed" if you like after just two years or so, In that period he "Found" more witches in East Anglia than the whole country did in the previous three hundred years. He got paid for finding a witch, if they weren't a witch he didn't get paid..So stands to reason he'll find a witch (idiots)..
Chances are if he hadn't called himself Witchfinder General he would have got away with it for longer as it was during the English Civil War and people of any real power were probably a bit busy..it was only because someone wrote to government to complain about "Their agents" methods that his deeds came to be noticed, so he quickly retired at 27 and no charges were made.
Bit of a localish lad & one of my favorite "proper" Hammer films "Witchfinder General" was mostly filmed in and around Kentwell Hall in Long Melford, Suffolk.
H would definitely be a gonna back then, me too probably as an atheist..

I saw the Hammer horror film about Mathew Hopkins a few months ago. Based on true events but Hopkins gets killed at the end of the film by someone who turns on him who he was torturing a witch confession out of. |

"in africa i think they still put people to death for being able to transform into an animal?
i'd definitely be burnt, got loads of people who would accuse me of being a witch.
a friend of mine who is African asked me if a stray cat that came into her house could have been a witch. She's an educated and intelligent women but her fear was genuine. I'm not sure if the death penalty still applies for
witchcraft.
This kinda worries me. lt shows that people from backwards parts of the world still harbour weird views.
Id hardly say backwards, more deprived of the basic essentials we are blessed with such as freedom, and education. Lets not forget some of these people can be very intelligent.
l would. Part of Europe were more advanced 2000 years ago than lots of part of Africa currently are. lt's just taboo to admit it.
er you just skipped a few hundred years of history
Witch trials were here and not that long ago.
Helen Duncan 1944 on trial for being a witch. What a weird view of the English establishment to prosecute for that!
No 'backward looking' there, eh? "

"I'd of sunk before they even started the trial
aaarrggghhhhhh splashhhh
ugghhhhhhh
If you sink and drown that means you are not a witch. If you floated it meant you were a witch so they fished you out and hanged you or burned you at the stake. Seems it really was a no win situation if you were put on trial for being a witch. "
ooh hurrahhh i thought i was bad but im not!! thanksies |

"Would you have faired well as one of the good, or been put to trial as a witch, in bygone ages? The trials and twisted logic that inevitably found people guilty were barbaric of course. (excuse the spelling here)"
I think I would have been a warlock!
Google the Pendle witches
That's where my mothers family came from ?? |
