Micheal Jackson
George Michael
Prince
David Bowie
All total legends who have died .
Got me thinking
Can you actually think of any modern day artist that will be a legend in years to come ? |

"One that springs to mind is Adele"
I think know people will bore of her. Can see her becoming a Shirley Bassey type act, churning out the same guff time and time again.
I can't think of one current artist who'll break in to that "legend" status |

Just because you're not a fan doesn't mean you're right. I think she's already iconic. |

There are a fair few who I'm not in to at all, but who I imagine will create a lot of noise by dying.
(Elton John, Beyoncè, Kylie Minogue, Madonna)
I didn't actually know Michael had died until this thread. Pretty sad about that. I liked his music, but also admired the way he led a gay lifestyle without ranting about it on tv all the time and demanding more "rights" - just went cruising around Hampstead and generally didn't appear to give a fuck. |

Paul carrack, the only reason i mention these artists who you may think of as not modern day , is because they are still producing original material( maybe not phil collins , ) and performing live, they may be already regarded as legends but they will in future too |

I was saying modern artist ie ones that are starting out now or the the couple of years.

Only Adele and Robbie spring to mind, but I wonder how many legends are recognised as such when they start out anyway - it takes time and a body of excellent work for that, i would imagine most people expected George to disappear after a few years of Wham like so many others have. Someone like Paul Young or Phil Oakey for instance could have gone on the great things, but just never did. |

"Perhaps Adele but she'll retire when she gets bored.
Can't see anyone else from the current slew of pop strumets existing as a legend. They're all over produced, bland, media trained dullards " |

Hard to say who will be a legend in the future, let's face it George is a noticeable loss weather you liked his music or not, but when he sang Careless Whisper you would never have known he would make it to legend status.
I hope for our children's sake there are innovative entertainers they can feel sorrow for long into the future.
RIP George, and Rick, let the music live on. |

While not pop.....Dr Dre
If he never existed music would be very very different. He's responsible for so much.
The likes of Adele, Rihanna, etc. Yeah they're popular but they haven't exactly made an impact that music would be totally different if they never came along.
Take legends like the Beatles, queen, Hendrix away and music again would be completely different. |

I don't think we can say, were a different generation, my dad said that Metallica was "just tuneless noise" when I played and justice for all too loudly, but I'm sure his father would have said the same thing about the jazz musicians he loved.
The only people that have a chance of guessing the legends of the future are our children, its their music, it belongs to them, just like the stone roses, oasis, pulp, Nirvana, nwa, Metallica, and motley crew were mine, so on that note I would say fall out boy, black veil brides, my chemical romance, and 21 pilots will one day be legends, or at least members of those bands will be |

"you forgot Amy Winehouse OP
so much talent and so young ...
Best thing she ever did was to cark it
Bit mean spirited."
More worded wrong...
I think that going as she was her music and performances would have continued downhill. Had she done that her future would have been more sad drop out that would have been ridiculed and forgotten...leaving when she did ....well you just remember the good stuff.

My legends will be the likes of Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Guns n Roses.
I grew up smashing the air drums and thrashing at air guitars to all of these. |

Is it me getting old n cranky, or does it seem easier for modern artists to achieve the 'legend' status? They've had a couple of good singles, or a successful album or 2 and they're deemed to be a legend.
If they've entertained the world with a dozen studio albums, numerous huge stadium tours, 100's of millions of record sales, then yes, I'd consider them legendary. |

Eva Cassidy seems to have become a legend only after her death. How many had actually heard of her prior to that?
A legend to one person may not mean bugger all to someone else. |
