It's not even Christmas Eve and I've already had the obligatory clash with my mother.

I am a hopeless daughter and an entirely selfish human being.

Good to know. Anyone for a mince pie?

Aren't you going to eat them all yourself?

Well, it's good to have a family tradition and she'll be all smiles when I pop in with their pressies. And yes, of course I love her, we are just very different.

My family and I normally bump heads at Christmas at some point (although the last few years have been fairly clean), so I'm kind of expecting it.

My brother in-law disgraced himself earlier in the year too so I've got to play nice and its going to be really awkward.

I love my family and are grateful for them but...

My brother called my mom a "fucking selfish bitch" at the Christmas dinner table one year...and that was one of our calmer years.

It's always best to get these things out of the way before the Turkey knife makes an appearance, so good on you for being ahead of schedule this year, OP

My friend and her sister both got arrested a couple of christmases ago when one of them pulled a knife on the other and their dad called the police.

I'm very thankful for my passive-aggressive family who just keep it about disappointment with each other and simmering low-level resentment instead.

I did mention I was glad not to be at Thanksgiving dinner this year after the U.S. election...I had my reasons.

To be fair I've called my dad some pretty savoury things (we have completely opposed political opinions), but I couldn't bring myself to say things to my mum.

Like it's any better/worse in reality though.

I wouldn't have it any other way
