To give or not to give........
Jump to: Newest in thread
You are walking through your local town centre.
You see a homeless person in a doorway.
You reach into your pocket and pull out a tenner.
As you are still approaching the thought crosses your mind that the 'homeless' person may spend it on drink or drugs.
As you level with the person , you ........ so c'mon what did you do with your tenner and what persuaded you to do it? |

I would go to the shop and by the person some food and drink instead. Then atleast I know they have had something decent to eat.
I used to buy a homeless man a subway on my way home from work every week. He was always so pleased as most people just ignored him . |

If the thought had crossed my mind, I'd give the tenner. I can understand how homeless people may choose drink and drugs to block out the reality of their situation. Possibly to forget things in their past. I also buy hot food and drinks if I see homeless people. That may be a work around and they will always be grateful of a hot Cuppa.
It's just been on the news how rough sleepers are 17 times more likely to be victims of crime than the rest of the population. Getting attacked, urinated on, spat at. Awful.
There but for the grace or God and all that... |

Our local greggs do coffee for the homeless. When we go in if we want to buy n extra coffee for them we just say so n a ticket gets put in a jar then the homeless just go in pick up a ticket n exchange it for a hot drink. Xxx |

"Most around where I live aren't homeless at all and just beggars."
When I think of beggars I think of the middle ages. It sees strange that it's a viable career path in the 21st century. |

I did exactly that last weekend. I went to the cashline to get dosh for a taxi home and there was a girl sitting out in the cold so I got a tenner for me and a tenner for her. I got in my taxi and I've no idea what she did with her tenner but it made me feel less of a wanker. |

Why is the butler not ringing the bell,,,,,
I mean surely in such dire circumstances bell ringing would seems an appropriate use for your butler ...... |

Last week there was a similar thread, someone said that they opened up a tab where the homeless person in particular could go and get food on a weekly basis. Currently I'm (him) in the process of arranging this, an excellent idea in my opinion. |

You don't. You buy them a sandwich.
Or if you are very switched on, you ask them what they need. |

Can't find the exact thread, Can't remember the title, sure someone will come along to shed some light. A poster mentioned that their work colleagues had put together a weekly tab at a food place so the particular homeless bod can get food on a weekly basis. |

Hm. I dont know what I would do. It depends a lot on my mood that day, I suppose. I grew up in a place where homelessness was a pretty regular occurence and I was brought up to, on occasion, offer money and food. I don't much care if they want to spend it on getting d*unk, but I do care whether or not they are actually homeless. I have no way of knowing either and, as I said, my choice to give the money would probably depends most on how I'm feeling that day. Fickle, I suppose. |

It's not fickle. Some days I think ....... i've given enough already. Most times I just give.
Same as you I don't question what they will do with it. Once I part with it it's no longer mine or my choice. |

Then you walk on by. Plenty of advice on BBC News and other sites.

"I would do what I did this week, bought the man a jacket to wear because he was freezing"
I was in a charity shop last winter and a clearly homeless man came in and wanted to buy a warm winter hat. The hat was £5 but he only had £3. The charity shop wouldn't sell it to him for £3. I watched the whole exchange and I don't really think the homeless guy knew what was going on. I ended up just buying him the hat, but it made me sad, the whole situation. The people running the shop not cutting the guy a break in winter and everyone else trying desperately to look like they didn't realize what was happening. |
