So I got one of these Amazon Echo thingies.

Alexa is the only woman in my life that I can say "shut up" to, without the fear of a slap

Brighton - even Hove!

Does it actually have conversations?

Brighton - even Hove!

Because if it does, that would be ideal for loneliness and people with dementia. The machine could chatter on for hours non stop about stuff, the past and relatives and reminders and stuff.

"Anything voice activated struggles with my accent "

You just have to persevere and train them. They only like "proper" English until you teach them better

I REALLY wanted one of these after seeing it on Mr Robot but people were complaining that the UK version is so stripped back compared to the US version and advising people to wait.

I shall investigate again.

Why would anyone knowingly place a corporate controlled listening device in their homes?

NSA back door, anyone?

I know what you are saying, but it's the same thing as having a phone or mic and camera connected to you computer.

Even your emails aren't off limits; I send myself 20mb pictures of my butthole everyday in the safe knowledge that somewhere someone will have to look at it and pay for have it stored on a server.

We have one too. I hope they bring in Sonos integration soon but I like her jokes. They make me giggle

I'm not a big fan - I can talk to to my phone for a lot of stuff. And I don't need home automation at this early stage. Maybe when it's the default.

I begrudge paying so much for tech too - phones, computers etc. And I dislike systems that are locked down, without universal interfaces.
