We once found $300 in $20 bills on the floor of a store. We brought it to the cashier to ask if anyone has reported losing it. She acted all weird and said she thinks maybe she might have dropped it herself. Seemed sketchey and we didn't believe her. Turned out to belong to a guy who had walked out to his car and ran back in looking for it. People are fucking horrible. ![](/icons/s/neutral.gif) |

Actually, scrub that. Hand it in. It might belong someone just as badly off.
Years ago my mum found a role of notes. I can't remember how much it was, but she handed it in. It belonged to a lad on his way to buy a motorbike. He was so thrilled he took me out for a spin on his bike when he got it. I was 8 and have been in love with motorbikes ever since. |

Wave it in his face shouting 'you make your own luck in life!'
No, seriously, I'd want to give it him and at the same time be worried it'd all go on booze in one go. If you could trust a local shop, I'd get them to give him a meal every day for so long. Or maybe buy a load of food for the homeless shelter, so it's spread out?? |

I've been working on a music video for a couple of old friends, the subject matter of which is homelessness and part of the process has been liaising with a homeless charity who have expressed an interest in using the video in the new year.
During filming we did have one shot of handing money to our 'homeless person' (played by an actor), however, this shot has not made it into the video as the homeless charities strongly advise AGAINST giving money to the homeless (unfortunately, I wasn't actually a the meeting so unsure of the explanation)
So, in this instance, I would say that I would take the £50 along to the nearest Police Station.
(Though I would be hugely suspicious, given the circumstances, of it being a prank)

Of all of the things you have suggested, donating it to a homeless shelter would be the best. |

I'd give it to him. We all need help at somepoint. I just wish people would show more charity. We should not have people sleeping on the streets or using food banks in 2016. Help each other. |

years ago had a row with a flat mate - over a pound note - she said i had hers - i didnt - so i ripped one in half and we kept half each - she found her money a couple of hours later with much apologies for being so stupid etc - we both carried the half note round for years as a reminder not to fight over silly things ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

Went to see The Sisters of Mercy in Kentish Town a good while back. Fantastic gig, stayed for the encore, missed the last tube train home. Stranded, tried kipping in Richmond Park, never been so cold and it was April so i can't begin to imagine what it's like for the homeless. Wandered about, found myself in Camden where i came across a tramp. Gave him a roley and bought him a bacon butty and had a good old chin wag.
So yes, why not buy him a pie or whatever, give him the change and wish him a good day. After all he is a human being and his need is the greater and not to forget 'there but for the grace of god go i'

That pales into comparison to my experience.
I found a very nice leather purse in a local small supermarket just lying on the floor, as I bent down to pick it up I could see this well dressed woman rushing towards me.... Oh that's mine she said very pleasantly,i was worried sick, it's got all cards in!.
.
I was just about to hand it her and for some reason I stopped opened it up looked at the bank card and said yeah I bet, these cards are such a pain phoning everybody to cancel... Mrs...
She looked me dead in the eyes and said pardon, I said Mrs... What's your name, just so I know it's yours.
And she unleashed the most foul mouthed tongue lashing on me, I was actually a bit taken back as the shop was really busy.
She then tried snatching it from my hand screaming give me the fucking purse and I couldn't walk away as I felt like I was mugging her lol, in the end she told me to fuck off and stormed off outside, I watched a gog as got into a brand new range rover and tootled off... Give it in the closest cafe or take away and ask them to credit to him, then leave him a note explaining what I have done.
The local homeless man where I live has accounts at two different places, that we (the community) top up for him so he can always get something to eat. |

"Give it to 'Shelter' or another local homeless charity "
...is a much better suggestion than any other on the thread.
I worked extensively with homeless people. Not everyone on the streets is who they profess to be.
Giving money sounds nice, might assuage your liberal guilt, whatever, but it could be spent on booze, drugs, given to a pimp... There's just *no* audit trail!
So. Either give goods - food, sleeping bags, whatever - or give the money to Shelter or a food bank or someone who'll deffo make sure it gets used well. |

It's a difficult one. As much as I would like to say I'd give it to him, my current position means I would probably take it (not for myself, but because I have two kids, one of whom is severely disabled and requires a lot of equipment. And the likelihood that I'll be able to go back to work because of this is slim).
Plus, I have seen too many "homeless" people who aren't actually homeless and in fact drive BMW'S and change back into their normal clothes when the day is done, or homeless people who do spend it on booze - I know that's a generalisation, but it does happen.
So I would probably use a tenner/twenty of it to buy him some food or donate it to a local homeless charity.

Local shelters would be better than Shelter the charity though. They don't do anything immediately for homeless people. I am basing this on having worked alongside two Shelter advisors for 2 years, who always expressed their feelings of helplessness when a homeless person attended a drop-in session and the best they could do *there and then* was signpost them to the local shelter. |

Some of them arent really homeless but i think the majority of them are because it happens a lot that people lose their jobs or housing benifits, dont get on with their parents, get divorced or have mental health problems, Most of the ones on the streets are single men. |

Oh really?
Did you know...
* There are 16 million people in the UK with savings of less that £100.
* 37% of households are a paycheck away from being unable to pay rent/mortgage.
* The single largest cause of homelessness (31% of cases) is due to the loss of a short-hold tenancy.
* 1 in 10 adults will experience homelessness at some point.
* Males are more likely to be street homeless - 14% are female.
* 20% of homeless women are on the street because they fled domestic violence. |

I was in worthing and had to sleep outside in a bus shelter for a coupla days...the police suggested i use the toiletts nearby to freshen up as i was looking for work in the town...i was able to warm up etc. And look half decent for my interview...i had to wait a day to get a yes or no...whent back to the toilets the next day and they had been locked up..had complaints about me using the facilities...
maybe some people felt uncomfortable but sleeping outside in winter all night is fucking uncomfortable..so a quick freshen up and get warm was a godsend in the morning.
i got the job and moved in to a really nice room overlooking the sea ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

I've done some volunteering for the homeless; a realy eye opener!!!
I'd pick up the £50, go to the nearest shop and buy food and drink and give it to him. Whether he was genuine or not, I'd still feel good for doing that ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

"Apparently no 1 has to spend more than 1 night on the street. After the 1st night there's help to be had.
Is there? Where from and how is it accessed?"
Usually from rough sleepers team that each local authority commission HOWEVER due to government cuts a lot of hostels that are supporting people funded are having their budgets slashed....this time of year some charities are doing cold weather provisions..there is a website called streetlink where you can let them know if you see someone sleeping rough.. |

Yes, i'd rather risk wasting money on a scammer than not giving to someone who really needs it. |

"I was in worthing and had to sleep outside in a bus shelter for a coupla days...the police suggested i use the toiletts nearby to freshen up as i was looking for work in the town...i was able to warm up etc. And look half decent for my interview...i had to wait a day to get a yes or no...whent back to the toilets the next day and they had been locked up..had complaints about me using the facilities...
maybe some people felt uncomfortable but sleeping outside in winter all night is fucking uncomfortable..so a quick freshen up and get warm was a godsend in the morning.
i got the job and moved in to a really nice room overlooking the sea "
That's a great story and a happy ending. It shows that there's always hope. Thanks for sharing. |

I wouldn't bother picking it up, my police station is too far away and it could be theft by finding if I didn't hand it in, especially if it was in CCTV area XXX |

All this chat about homeless...
I was in London yesterday, and there were 2 homeless men where I parked.
I went and spoke to them, asking why they were outside in the cold... there's places for them to go!
One of the men said he wouldn't go to a shelter, he would rather stay on the streets and beg for whatever he gets.
Some people don't want help... they even turned down a coffee from my coach!

I've been off reading up on this. You have to take 'reasonable steps' to find the owner. So, if it was a pound you might glance round. For a £1 that is reasonable. For £50 it could be considered reasonable to hand it in. If the police station was miles away, it wouldn't be reasonable to go there, so you ccould keep it.
If you found £50k in a bag, then what to do??
Well if you hand it in and nobody claims it, then it's yours. But if they think it could be the proceeds of crime, then it will be confiscated. |

I give up when it comes to finding things and picking g them up. I once worked at a major company doing security work and found a wallet. So picked it up had a look I side for details and there was over £1000 in it plus about 6 credit cards and God knows what else.
Phoned the owner who came to collect it and not even a thanks. Was a case of "good to see your doing your job".

I would take him some food/hot drink daily/ until it ran out, I wouldn't give him the money because A) you don't know what he would spend it on and B) I don't want to risk him bejng attacked for it.
Even though I don't have any money this Christmas and a huge part of me would want to keep it and have a 'nicer Christmas' I would rather help this person out and at least make sure he was fed, if only for a week or so

"Give it in the closest cafe or take away and ask them to credit to him, then leave him a note explaining what I have done.
The local homeless man where I live has accounts at two different places, that we (the community) top up for him so he can always get something to eat."
That is a really good idea. My church along with other ones in our area provide shelter and hot meals in the coldest weeks of the year together with the YMCA. But if we had a scheme like this going all year round I would donate. |
