The chatter is predicting an increase of 3% minimum "
I get a discount being single so I guess I would just get less |

Not sure what point your making, are you complaining about it. My daughter is disabled and will need social care when I am no longer around. Not her fault, she didn't ask to be born like it.
The lady next door has social care to her home, not her fault she's young and dying.
Be thankful for your health and stop moaning about paying a bit extra. X |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but under present rules, can't they take someone's house to pay for their care?
If that is the case, then its going to save a lot of families a lot of heart ache, from losing the home they grew up in |

The OP is not making a point...
It's simply an invitation to discus an emerging proposal that is being reported in today's news |

I think most reasonable people would contribute.
Let's be honest if I could be assured the NHS would improve by simple financial means I'd give an extra amount every month...tantamount to private care almost!
But the simple fact is, that most public sector issues aren't compounded by finances alone I believe.
It's a combination of customer interaction, performance figures in a sector that deals in the commodity of people not products and unrealistic expectation.
Let's face it...if we're lucky were all getting older so it's something we should focus on in addition to the other social care aspects. |

if I was single an still no family, I wood like to av owned my own house flat (an av ir paye off so all I ad left was bills), by the time in 80, as I'm finding out with my grandparents it's not an easy time looking after someone!
an when I'm older I might av more problems, the to my back so if i was working full time,an add enough, for bills then I wood pay the little extra, or av the extra to use for when I av to retire, as might av some time off work due to my back so wood need money set aside for that. But life goes on an I'm doing much better than I was a few years ago! |

Print millions for the banks, then let richer areas collect more council tax - improving local care, whilst areas with widespread poveety gain nothing and care standards fall even lower.
We should be ending much of our ongoing austerity drive and providing basic, essential care services and mental health support. But this government prefers it this way. |

I believe that it is the way the money is used that is the main issue. The nhs is u der more strain because we as a nation don't look after our own health the way we should. Also pay the locum doctors and the consultants less, hire a few more nurses, stop agencies who don't give a rats ass.
To be honest I don't have much to do with it all. The nhs is amazing i have seen some wonderful things, but when i see that line of sports cars parked in the doctors spaces i cant help but wonder when my money is going.
My gran was transported from one ward to another the other week, they hired an outside company to move her on site, a two man team and an ambulance?

its wrong, stop foreign aid, stop paying the eu, and stop paying unlimited benefits to new arrivals, stop paying benefits to anyone who has never worked. charge all non british for any medical before they are even seen. and stop paying the council staff over the 100k like they do.
thats more than enough to sort of the nhs and care, schools and housing even the roads. |

I think they should completely overhaul the tax system & close all loopholes that prevent people & companies paying what they should. Any companies that operate in the UK should have to pay taxes here regardless of where their head office is based.
Any person receiving care with assets over £25k are charged at full cost - for home care this is @£14.42 per hour charged by the 1/4 or half hour.
Residential care is over £400 per week.
I advised you put property into your kids names as soon as you can & spend your savings on your family whilst you can see them enjoy it!!!

The system needs to be funded. This isn't the way, IMO. Wealthier areas with stronger council tax bases will be able to raise far more than poorer areas can with the same % increase. And it tends to be those poorer areas which have more demand for services.
Unless people are prepared to accept even more of a postcode lottery than already exists, there must be some form of needs-based equalisation of funding. |

It's not to replace that. It's just to tread water and stop the entire system collapsing in on itself for another couple of years. |

Abandon all sense of humanity as well? doctors are supposed to fill on forms for non British citizens and the costs are supposidly retrieved from their respective governments, you can't blame the government entirely. |

If you had any understanding of the figures involved, you'd understand that what you've described wouldn't be "more than enough" or even "anywhere near enough" to provide for those things. |

Spot on! The plans will leave poorer areas with even worse care levels.
We need to increase funding into the NHS, mental health and social care - instead of cutting it. |

I'm a community carer. I'm paid crap for what I do! Beside the point.
I don't mind the rise because I know the benefits of care.
I work 12 days in a row. My day starts at 8am and ends at 11pm (I do get a few breaks in the day). I don't do it for the money. I do it for the smile I get for holding a hand when one of my clients is lonely or sad. I do it because I know I'm often the only face a client she's all day. I do it because my family have needed carers and I saw the wonderful job they did. I can honestly say that it's exhausting but the most rewarding job I've ever had (other than being a mum).
We all know someone that has care or will need care. And we all know that at some point, we may need care |

We are totally happy to pay more for care through Council Tax. We pay more in building maintenance, Sky and lighting & heating than we do in Council Tax. Perhaps society is a little too obsessed with having the latest thing than paying for increased care? |

I'd happily pay a 3% increase...spread over the 12 monthly installments it's an insignificant amount (around £6 for me), and if it genuinely will be put towards care for those who need it then why would anyone begrudge the cost of a few cups of coffee??
In years to come we could all need a helping hand, and I'd like to think that future generation will show a bit more humanity than the current one |

My point has nothing to do with a job title. It has everything to do with people thinking they are owed everything. If someone has a disabled chiled then it is thier responsibility not mine nor anyone elses. To many people just have kids knowing they wont be able to provide and rely on benefits...

Children have disabilities not through choice, same as serving members of the military and ex members..

Until my grandad died 7 weeks ago His care cost £1000 a week only 50% funded. Even the expensive places like that are still horrible places to be.
If me paying more council tax meant someone else's grandad would have a nicer place to end their life.. then I'm all for it. |

If there was a more effective system in place Social Services would have millions of pounds available to them. Many people have to pay a contribution or "top up" fee for their care. The Govt pays it to the person receiving the care and not to the care provider. They then don't pay it and consequently build up huge bills, often running into tens of thousands of pounds that Social Services do nothing to claim back |

You do realise that every person that cares for their disabled child or relative saves the country billions by caring for them. Carers allowance is a pittance... yet if you have to pay someone else to do it... its a fortune...

I find it very alien, that people want their elderly family to be looked after by the state. In Asian culture it is considered a great honour taking care of elder relatives..
I was with my grandfather till the day he passed. I would not let anyone look after except myself. I gave up my job to make sure he was comfortable.
Seriously as soon i knew he needed care i was like to hell with the job ill look after him!! it shocked to most of my non Asian friends who thought i was throwing my career away for a dying old man! But with his blessing I got a better job.
I Know it hard. epically if you don't get on or others family, and commitments, but we made it work. He died in my arms at home with family. Its a time I will never forget. See his smile before he left this world.
I'm just curious about the whole thing, no judging anyone.
thanks
But in answer to the question I don't mind paying more. but I do feel that attitudes to our ageing population needs to change..

Not everyone can afford to give up work to look after someone. They have a mortgage and children and can't just give up.
Some old people need better care than a relative can give, in their home. Some people need care all their lives and their parents become too old or ill to care for them. Did you have family support to look after your grandfather? |

Not true. Every resident is assessed to pay a contribution "assessed charge" direct to the home with their local council paying the difference. If they don't pay the home the council does & then bulls the resident.
Any further too-up should come from a family member. If a resident owns a property a deferred payment scheme is offered & the debt secured against the propert with the Land Registry. I am one of many local authority employees who do recover this money

thats more than enough to sort of the nhs and care, schools and housing even the roads. " Well said . If we withdrew all foreign aid I think we would save £12 billion.
I do not want any of our taxes going on foreign aid . If I want to held foreign aid , I can make a voluntary donation . |

"Correct me if I'm wrong, but under present rules, can't they take someone's house to pay for their care?
If that is the case, then its going to save a lot of families a lot of heart ache, from losing the home they grew up in
Yes and no
For care in the community, the primary residence is not taken into consideration, only savings beyond an upper threshold are
For residential care, the primary residence is not taken into consideration where a spouse or civil partner and a host of other people are in residence
If the house is jointly owned the above is correct but the other residents have to be over 60 yrs old to be a protected party
JG x"
Not correct
According to the Care Act 2014, if a 'child' has lived in the property for a number of years and has been a carer prior to the age of 60 and does not have any other property to reside in, then The primary property is disregarded |

"If there was a more effective system in place Social Services would have millions of pounds available to them. Many people have to pay a contribution or "top up" fee for their care. The Govt pays it to the person receiving the care and not to the care provider. They then don't pay it and consequently build up huge bills, often running into tens of thousands of pounds that Social Services do nothing to claim back
JG x " I know how it works My point is that the local authority so often fails to claim the money back. Just because yours does, doesn't mean they all do. And believe me I know. I manage a 48 bed mental health unit. Currently just 3 Service Users owe a total of £85000 between them. It gets discussed aplenty, but that is where it starts and ends. |

Never mind thew slightly akward state of affairs whereby we spent most of the 19th century beating people up and stealing their countries (and indulging in a spot of genocide to boot) and then expected the populations of said countries to die in their millions for us in the early 20th century, eh? |

I'm not really into talking politics ...
But ....
I have to admit to being a little resentful of the amount of tax I pay each month out of my sad wages!
I would like to think that I am reaping the benefits of living in the UK but I'm not.
I haven't been to the doctor since 1999 and I have a private dentist.
I have never claimed benefits and never had social housing.
I don't have children or need bin men to come to my house as I would happily recycle everything myself!
It doesn't make me better ( I'm definitely not looking down on anyone!) it just makes me a bit bitter that a lot of my wages are going on things I never use!
I feel like there are a lot of entitled people in this country and we should all work for what we have.
Everyone can do something.

But the point is that those things are (or should be) available if you need them.
If you don't need them, then great, but you don't know when misforune could strike.
You might feel like there are a lot of entitled people in this ocuntry, but in actual fact the stats disagree with you - millions every year go unclaimed in benefits because people who are entitled to them, don't claim them.
Don't believe the propaganda.

"
............. Why should someone els pay for YOUR child. Ypu should be paying the costs
"
When my sister was pregnant, she casually expressed that would not like a child with Downs or similar if possible and was seriously chastised by the midwife for even considering such a thing. Right until the birth, the child developed entirely normally but the birth was very difficult. The resulting delay by the hospital led to the baby being starved of oxygen for five minutes during delivery and was born quadriplegic, unable to feed, unable to control her body temperature, unable to do anything for herself, destroyed sleep patterns etc.. The cocktail of meds she had to take just to try and stabilise her condition was phenominal. The only food the child could take was incredibly expensive as it had to be tube induced. The amount of equipment to help with her day to day living was mind blowing. It was a 24 hour job looking after her and physically draining. My sister and her husband chose to have a child and were quite financially able to provide for it. They did not have the funds to raise such a badly disabled child and I think very few people do! No one chooses to have a disabled child, be it through naturally circumstances or through malpractice as was the case of my niece and until you are in the position of trying to care for a disabled child, I respectfully suggest you think more carefully. |

Yes I agree that it is comforting to know that these things are there.
But for someone like me it would be more beneficial to have the same amount as I pay in tax to go into a savings account and I could choose what it would be spent on.
Or it could be spent on living my life now I would have a much better quality of life if I didn't have to pay the amount of tax / insurance I do at the moment.
I don't own a TV or read newspapers so I'm not basing it on any propaganda.
I like to work for my living and don't deny anyone a better life in another country or a disabled person a chance to live comfortably.
I just think it's all a bit unfair how it's calculated x |
