I'd say they are situational, if you have the money and are driving round in top of the range motors i don't see anything wrong with it, likewise if you are driving a really nice well restored classic car then again great
If your driving a 7 year old corsa 1.1 then it's just no they look ridiculous |

There and to the left a bit |
Saw one locally the other day that was BO55 FAB ...did make me smile and wonder Have also seen a V4 GNA locally too that was spaced to make the intent obvious....
...although generally speaking I'm not a fan of them for similar reasons to what others have already said. |

Used to be owned by Steve Parrish, a former racing driver/motorbike racer and now a commentator. He lived in Wilmslow at the time. Not sure if he still owns it. |

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else |
I have one, it's just my initials within the standard layout.
Other people's opinions are not a concern - just as I'm sure people that buy eyelashes for their headlights, or "baby on board " stickers, or minis, don't care for my opinion... |

I have a personalised plate. Bought it nearly 18 years ago to go on my previous car, and transferred it over to my current car when I got it nearly 14 years ago.
It was one of those available from the DVLA's select registration scheme (I think it was called)
Was a pretty reasonable price too |

What's wrong with wanting people to look at you? My dream car is a escort Mexico properly restored, if i could afford one of them then yeah why not put a private plate on it so people say attention to the thing you take care of?? |

Some people may see it as attention seeking, but I didn't get mine for that reason at all.
I'm not the sort of person who seeks out the approval of others.
My particular plate follows the standard registration format (for the age of my car) and so most won't even notice that it's a personalised plate.
And to be fair, my car isn't what you'd call common anyway (There's probably less than 50 of them in the UK), so it's not like I need a personalised plate to stand out, lol. |

Think they're naff personally, I remember my mate having something random like NCZ 451 I asked him what the reference was he said there wasn't one. I told him to change his name to Nickazaz so it would mean something then.
Having said they're naff one in Lincoln made me laugh, it was a Range Rover with B19 COX that did rather tickle me |

It amazes me how some people worry about how others spend their money or how they think others look. Attention seeking and lacking in something. If that's so it's better than jealousy. As I've said I have 2 private plates 1 on my bike 1 on my car both very similar and a play on my name but most of all and the reason why I bought them I think they are funny especially the double takes when people notice then. I've put a picture of 1 or nearly anyway in my gallery. Go see if it makes you smile |

"The complex where my mum lives there's a lady with H1 on a knackered old honda, its probably worth 10 times more than the car!"
I worked on a car last week, guy was loaded and had a car with S1 on it, recons it was worth 1 million, I know it did sell in 2008 for £404.000 |

Lacking in something?
I've never quite understood that if someone enjoys having a private plate or a nice car for example it means they're compensating.
Maybe they just want a private plate and a nice car? |

No. they're all public, anyone can see them.
I think they are now termed cherished registration.
I bought one that came with a free car ... no wait it came free with a car and I sold it with the car, they don't really entertain me but I'm not against people who have them.

I've had one in the past, but I got bored of tuning my cars it was getting ridiculous, my R5 gt turbo had over 15 grand spent on it before my girlfriend wiped it out, I lost interest after that
I've seen some good ones though
V14GRA
A55ULT
A11PUN
The most expensive ones are the ones that have anything to do with the name Singh, like 51NGH.

I got mine for my "fun" car, and have to say I've seen the same variation of the plate on a lot of the other cars in the marque. It's just a bit of fun, and I've seen a lot of people takin pics in my rear view mirror.
As others on the thread have said I did it to make myself smile, if others don't like it that's just fine I didn't do it for them ! |

I'll be truthful, I like being looked at. It would be awful to go unnoticed in day to day life.
I wear fairly brightly coloured clothes that draw the eye too.
It's not something I feel is a bad thing. |

They all still belong to the dvla just like "your/my" driving licence does and can be removed from your possession through a court if you are found to be in breach of contract or using them illegally, like I said they are now called cherished registrations

Ita spoilt it in a way for the registrations that were unique. |

This is pretty much how I see it. My initials are such that it spells something that make other people smile too. I was sitting at the lights the other day and an elderly lady saw it, chuckled and pointed it out to her husband.
