"Sweating it out works for me. I turn the heating up and sleep in clothing, with an extra layer or two during the day."
I think it's the heating that's made me get it. I had to turn my rad off in my room cos it gives me a dry throat and this weekend I've been in the house practically all weekend, heating full blast then last night I could feel this coming on. |

Hot milk with a drop of whiskey sweats it out during the night. Alternatively vicks vapour rub on your chest, throat and a bit under your nose helps, plus Olbas Oil on a tissue.
Night nurse helps with sleeping, although you wake up a bit groggy. |

I started with it last Thursday and been in bed all weekend feeling like shit. I've taken 4hrly Paracetamol, rubbed Vic on my chest and back, done Olbas oil inhalations and taken Covonia medicine. I'm still snotty so I hope you don't get it as bad as me as mine felt like flu as I was also very weak. Honey and Lemon lockets are also handy for the tickle. Good luck x |

All the old wives tales in the world won't really help. It boils down to a few basic things. Keep the fluids topped up, eat well, rest when you can, get a good multivitamin in, use medicine to help ease symptoms. |

What usually works for me, is half a bottle of beechams all in one, cold and flu remedy, Read the instructions, it says may cause drowsiness, do not operate machinery. ha ha that means you will have to leave your rampant rabbit in the drawer. ![](/icons/s/wink.gif) |

You need a hot toddy....
Mix up a lemsip in mug with freshly boiled water, add honey and loads of whiskey, (like half a mug full) and drink it at bedtime. Tastes disgusting but works a treat. Hope you feel better soon. |

When I was in Australia, I got given this and it still works to this day...
Juice of one lemon
5 garlic cloves (peeled whole & gently crushed)
Teaspoon paprika
Honey
Stick it all in a glass with boiling water. Let it steep and drink it. Tastes pretty rough but it'll bring your cold out quicker. |

Totally agree, and don't go out for the sake of it, or you'll pass it on to others, it'll soon pass, be patient. |

Loads of fluids, at least a pint of squash (lemon is best) every hour you're awake, extra layers in bed to sweat it out, lots of sleep and avoid caffeine and dairy products. Paracetamol x2 as per pack intervals...

Follow these instructions and the next day you will feel better.
You need to keep the top half of your body hot.
1. Put a t-shirt, a thick jumper preferably a hoody with hood up. then a dressing gown on ontop. Leave the bottom half of your body wearing Underwear only. This stops you over heating.
Get into a hot bed and if you feel your to hot expose your legs only.
Drink plenty of water with 2 paracetamols and then have a large glass of whiskey. (Very important)
If you don't like whiskey the try brandy. Or mix with . This works xx |

I can't believe people still believe these old wives tales
Sweating it out...no such thing unfortunately.
As others have said you can only ease your symptoms until your immune system fights it off.
A few drops of olbas oil in a hot bath does help me feel better though. |

The symptoms are your body's immune system trying to get rid of it, hence why your temperature changes and your nose and throat get irritated. So I don't try and fight the symptoms since they're there for a reason; I just try and keep comfy, listen to what my body wants, rest as much as I can, keep hydrated and avoid milk for a few days since that makes phlegm worse in my experience. |

Cochrane and other research evidence re_iews show statistically significant benefits for using zinc but not echinacea or vitamin c. Using a zinc supplement within the first 24 hours, showed a reduction in the duration of the cold.
I dont think that sny other supplement has research trial evidence that is double blind standard and provides results that are statistically significant. Ill take Zinc and symptom relief stuff. |

I had a bad virus but two tablespoons of Benylin MUCUS Cough 4 doses every 24 hours within a week or more the cold/virus will be on its last legs a few sneezes here and there still trying to Infect but will go the mucus side will go but you,ll have to help it on its way the pharmacist will ask you if you have had it before you may have to ask your doctor first if its ok to use, I highly recommend it. ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |

It may have made you feel better but it did nothing to get rid of your illness, viral infections are often over in a week to ten days anyway. They are not call self limiting diseases for nothing. |

Had mine for over a week and got right on my tits! Lemsip helped a bit but nothing really worked, just had to let it get to its peak and then slowly got better.
Hope you feel better soon

Being self-employed, I can't do sick, so.....
Covonia is brilliant
Redoxon with zinc (huge dose of vit C)
plus
a knub of ginger and a clove of garlic dinely chopped and then infused (boiled in water). add some honey and lemon and drink. Eat the garlic and ginger.
Sounds horrid but I now actually like it and I don't get sick very often and NO......you don't stink of garlic either!
If it's a virus, then there's really nothing you can do except sweat and wait it out! |

Always make my own medicine for colds and flu...fresh lemon juice a good tea spoon. Raw honey one tea spoon minimum (has to be raw which means it's not been cooked which kills most of the natural anti biotic and anti oxidant properties) a bit of fresh ginger (normally a couple of thin slices and then warm water about 50 degrees C (not red hot or boiled as again destroys half the goodness in the honey and ginger) until honey disolves and sip slowly always works for me...and also good as a preventative this time of year once or twice a week.. |

"I bought Vicks first defence yesterday but doesn't feel like it's doing anything, other than make me sneeze a lot after each spray. "
Nothing cures a cold. Nothing. You have to wait until it goes but in the meantime, just treat the symptoms. That's all there is. |

These over the counter medications are like head lice, they loose there punch once your body accepts the forgien materials and your body then becomes immune to there benefits
Hope this helps |

Add an inch of root ginger to 5 cloves garlic, crushed, or sliced thinly, and boil together for 5 mins. Equally effective.Put the lemon juiceand honey in just before you drink it. That one came from Jamaica. |
