I hate this trope.
It's trotted out to justify all sorts of behaviour and act as the excuse for doing whatever we want to do.
Yes, some lives are cut off sooner than others but that is part of life.
Life isn't too short (for most of us) it's just we're rubbish at doing more with our lives.
If your life was longer, what would you actually do differently? How much longer would it have to be for you to do those things?

" life is all about doing what we want to do, enjoying the experience of being human..its too short in the scheme of things, to be doing shit we've been told we must and should do..i've packed a lot in, in 45 years and i shall endeavour to continue that in years to come, by living the now moment as fully as i am able to x |

Life is not measured in years but by the deeds we do....
I am content, I have had an interesting life and if it was to end tomorrow (a circumstance I was forced to confront earlier this year), I can hand on heart say that I have lived
If I am to love again, I must accept that I have loved; if I am to die, then I must have lived..... |

Life's for living and enjoying yourself. Also enjoying others company and making the most of it. Do what you want to do without being an asshole and making a fool out of yourself in a bad way ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

"lifes to short" you never know what is gonna happen or when your life might end so go out and enjoy your self and take opportunities when you get the chance don't leave it for that opportunity to around again.
You can never promise your self a tomorrow. |

I get that but people don't do that. They put things off and then all the tomorrows have been used up. Their life wasn't too short to do the things they just never prioritised doing them.

"I would probably go on more holidays to be fair "
So, if your longer life means you are incapacitated, decrepit and bed-bound you'd take more holidays? It's not the length of the life but the use of the life I am arguing.

It wasn't to short because luck was on their side.
A friend of mine went food shopping with her 2 children on a Friday she put it off for 1 she normally went on Thursday.
She left the car park and as she got onto the main road a lorry had a blow crashing into her car, she died at the scene.
What difference is 1 more day gonna make....
If she had gone on Thursday kids would have just been dropped of at nursery, the lorry wouldn't have been on the road at that and wouldn't have smashed into the car and kids would still have their mum |

It's not how much longer but more how much money. I could do loads but unfortunately I am not a multi millionaire therefore I have to work so that I can earn enough to do the little bits that we do manage. |

I don't know that life is too short to do anything for most of us .
The only thing I want to regret when it ends are things I did , not things I didn't do . |

That's a very tragic and sad story but you can't say that going on Thursday would mean she would still be alive. It's possible something else would have killed her and you would be telling us about her being alive if only she had gone on another day.
As I said, some lives are cut off earlier than others.
I'm sorry for your loss of your friend.

That is the issue for most of us. Yet, there are things we could do that cost little or nothing but put them off as it's not *the* thing we think we *really* want to do.

I agree with you. Sometimes we get complacent and take things for granted and put our life at risk un-necessarily.
But some might love it for the adrenalin rush.
So it's really back to individual priority in life.
As for how long I want to live, I'm hoping to be alive as long as I'm independent. I pray everyday not to lose my independence and has to depend on someone in life (eg physically). |

Me too. I'm planning on living to 60 and then reviewing the situation. If it looks like I am going to experience the diseases that have affected the women in my family then I am checking out before that happens.

Interesting point of view Lickety.
I think I'm pretty rubbish at times about doing stuff, I have good intentions but they fall by the wayside for various reasons.
Maybe it's the window of opportunity in the everydayness that's too short as opposed to life itself. |

I think people say this to enable them to live in the moment, or present a bit more. To take heed of the little things that bring pleasure- even recognising them can be difficult with too much introspection.
I actually say "No, life is too long! Too long to go through it with regrets", and that's why I try and appreciate my life more. It does make me less tolerant of bullshit though! ![](/icons/s/redface.gif) |

I think we're also a bit lazy about some things. Mundane takes up lots of time if we let it.

Fantastic! I also say that life is too long. I didn't start the thread with it as it would have been too boring to explain what I say it but your succinct definition is very useful.

I guess it's a matter of perception: it can also be a positive one, very similar to one of my favourite quotes "We should not worry for tomorrow, nor torment ourselves by dwelling upon our troubles, for the days of our lives are few and evil, and we shall be a long time dead." (or even "Consider the lillies...")
"Yes, some lives are cut off sooner than others but that is part of life.

I am actually very satisfied with my life. We made a conscious decision ten years ago to switch monetary wealth for quality of life wealth. I'm very glad we did. Life's too short, or maybe just too precious, to waste it working all the hours God sends just to be able to afford a bigger car or a fancy yacht (which is what we were about to sign up to at the time )
It's also why we joined a swinging site...

'Live your life or it will live you', it's a phrase I came up with a few years ago, I actually have it on the top of my profile.
Outside of things restricted by societies rules or economic resource we are faced with choices every day which boil down to either 'doing' or 'putting off'.
If you do then you're living your life, if you put off then your life is living you.
My experience has taught me that those who do are usually happier, more fulfilled and less stressed than those who put off. The real tragedy is that putting off for many can easily become a habit. |
