Anything under £50 is an OBD reader which just tells you generic fault codes. If you want something that can really get into the depths of a cars ECU you need something laptop based, or a high-end Bosch / Snap-On scanner which is £500+
My advice is to take it to a garage if it's just for the odd code here and there |

"are the cheap ones on group-on and wish any good see loads of them but unsure "
It really does depend on what your looking to do with the reader ?
As said if it's a one off easier to go and get someone to do it ?

I've a cheapie one and it's great..tends to point in the rough direction and allows you to clear fault codes..tends to do the rounds as mates borrow it..so my advice is find a mate with one ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

I wouldn't be without my code scanner.
I also have a Bluetooth OBD dongle which I can communicate with from my phone or my Android Car Stereo - using an app called Torque to scan and clear codes.
Torque is a free download (well, at least Torque light is) and you can pick up a dongle for a couple of quid - but be careful. Some of the really cheap ones from China that claim to read all protocols actually only read about 3 - I needed a device that could read SAE J1850-VPW which was used by General Motors in the US between 1996 and 2008. Since 2008 all US manufacturers have been mandated to use the same protocol (prior to this there were 3 in the US)
So best to find out which protocol your car uses, or at least get a device that can handle all of them - there are over 10 of them. |

That's all I use TBH and it's always been enough for me. Never used a mechanic since buying my first restoration project at 15. My MOT tester tells me that they don't take on some of the jobs I've myself (three timing belts on a rover 2.0 KV6 for example).
One could say I'm good with my hands. Another, a tight git lol ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

Get your battery tested..may be on its way out as this time of year lights etc cause a bigger drain..battery load tester..about £40 on eBay or find a friend..other test multimeter on battery..check voltage-should be over 12..start engine..should go up to check alternator |
