As the title says, how long can you pass it off as just not feeling great. People are beginning to notice a change in me outside and inside work and I can't keep brushing it off much longer

I can't help but feel sad a lot now but I've no idea why. I stopped seeing a girl a couple of months back but it's not her as I don't miss or think off her nearly as much as I did, plus I was feeling down quite a lot long before she came on the scene

If this is in the wrong section the feel free to move or delete. I'd just appreciate some other people's opinions or experiences

Brighton - even Hove!

Maybe you're still feeling down after your girlfriend left? Have you got any physical symptoms or just a general malaise and sense of ennui?

I think you need to go and see a professional if it's causing you so much angst. A friend of mine suffered from it and is so much better for it now,

Good luck OP

Maybe your affected by Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) which could be because of being winter now. Just a thought

Hull but travel regularly

Are there things you used to love doing that you no longer do or enjoy? How's your appetite? How's your sleep? Those 3 give you a good head start on knowing if it's depression x

Preston

For two years I thought I had seasonal affective disorder, got quite low when the clocks changed. Then the third year of it hit and I had a breakdown, went to my doctor and was put on anti depressants, I also got one of those light boxes.

Two years on and I still get moments when I feel myself falling down the hole, but I know the triggers and fight to climb out.

As others have suggested, go see your doctor, there's no harm and he/she will know what to do.

I usually prefer winter to the summer and my sleep is all over the place the last wee while. Some days if I'm off I could sleep 12 hours other days I struggle to sleep at all no matter how tired I feel

I've had a really good year, although I still felt down from time to time I've done loads of things I've always wanted to do so I'm hoping its maybe I'm just on a come down from the highs

Usually I love a good party but it's the last thing I want to do at the minute. I don't know when I started feeling like this it just seems to have crept upon me

Central

The lounge is always the right section to get some feedback, support or explore topics of interest not covered in the other sections. It includes your well being.

How we personally define depression and what it is, is less important than ensuring that you're as well as you can be - emotionally/mentally and physically.

Sometimes depression and low mood levels come from seemingly nowhere - or they may be triggered cumulatively from life's experiences.

If your life isn't right for you then i think it's the time to explore what you possibly could do about it. It's unfair and inappropriate to diagnose you from a short message or so.

If you have someone to talk things through with - even if It's just your feelings, then it may help you gain a clearer understanding of where you're at.

If you don't have contacts such as friends for this, there are support options, including the Samaritans - who don't just support people who are suicidal.

Your GP is also the manager of your health care, so have an appointment, where you can open up. They're able to expertly take a professional perspective and assess if medical options, including medication and/or therapy would probably help you.

Good luck!

OP it's fine asking this question in the lounge - the Mind website has a lot of info and advice. As for any health concerns, your GP is a good start.

please check the side affects.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

As others have stated, go and get some help.

You are describing depression symptoms but there are questionnaires you can take to help judge where you're at.

There is no instant fix but the drugs help, when you get the right ones for you. Doing the work helps, but only when you feel stable enough to invest the energy to address the issues.

I have always found the lounge forum supportive at times like these.

Please go and see your GP who can sign post you in the right direction depending upon his diagnosis. He knows your history and current meds. Reassurance from him may even be enough to help you get through this. Good luck x

Thanks for everyone's advice

I didn't know where else to ask where I'd be anonymous as I don't feel comfortable talking to my friends as I don't think they'd understand how I could be depressed. I'm usually the livewire on nights out and stuff

Can I also ask is depression and anxiety the same thing?

There was a meme a little while ago asking, What does depression look like? When you flicked to the image it was a wall of smiles.

Most people don't think of me as someone with depression or someone who could become depressed.

When you feel a little better you should consider opening up. You might be nicely surprised at the response. Carrying around the burden of keeping yourself a secret is hard and drags you down as all burdens do.

I've in no way ever felt suicidal. Far from it, I want to get back to being how I was. I just feel sad because I feel sad. I don't know how else I can describe it. I know it sounds daft

It's good you haven't felt suicidal. Not everyone with depression feels suicidal.

You have to work out whether you are having a reaction to something, a blue period or depression.

Not for me, no, they're quite different. Sometimes I get both.

Depression for me is like a broken bone that hasn't healed properly, it keeps coming back to bother me but I just sort of get on with it.

But anxiety I hate more, it's far more debilitating.
